Edge Legacy removed. How do I get it back?

    Greetings,

There is a problem with Microsoft Answers that doesn't allow you to ask a question in the Edge Legacy forum.

The latest Windows Update has removed Edge Legacy.

    1. How do I get it back, especially my Favorites?
    2. How do I prevent Windows Update from removing other programs?

    Thanks,
    Shane.

Windows 7 has its Favorites folder still intact during major changes, if you can find the Favorites folder, maybe, hopefully, your URLs are still in there -- I don't know for sure.

    This folder:

    %userProfile%\Favorites

contains Internet Explorer favorites. I think the Edge Legacy favorites are located in:

    %localAppData%\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\AC\MicrosoftEdge\User\Default\DataStor e

However, it's not in a format that I can read.

Legacy Edge saved its favorites in a database, You might be able to find the folder in Windows.old but I don't know what can read it you may be able to if you restore the folder to it's original spot the new Edge might be able to import them.

If you still have legacy edge / edge html installed on your system

Back up these two folders to a flash drive
    C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe
    C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdgeDevToolsClient_8wekyb3d8bbwe

Back up these two folders to a flash drive as well:
    C:\Users\USER\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe
    C:\Users\USER\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdgeDevToolsClient_8wekyb3d8bbwe

    Update to 19041/2/3 . 928

    Uninstall EdgeChromium

    Reboot

Copy /paste these 4 folders to their respective locations and overwrite the old folders, you may have to take ownership of C:\Windows\SystemApps as well as AppData\Local\Packages

    Next Reboot

Go to Settings -> Apps & Features -> Edge -> Advanced Options and then click Reset and then Repair

    Good luck!

As for keeping and using Legacy Edge, you can't/won't/shouldn't. Microsoft removed it for a reason. The new Edge is what you have now (if you want to use Edge).

Some years ago I learnt never to depend on MS programs that retained my data (e.g. favourites, email, mail rules, contacts).
That was when I used Outlook Express, withdrawn, then Win Mail, withdrawn, then no mail... I chose to go 3rd party. And to use something where I could import, export and move the related data.

The Mail app demonstrates similar weakness. No export capability.

Now we have this dramatic change with Edge- albeit well announced in advance and implemented progressively, so you should have had the chance to ensure you prepared accordingly.

Will you now choose to depend on Edge Chromium alone?

Restoring the old Edge is like trying to fight against the tide. Been there, done that with Outloook Express and Win Mail. MS wins - better to choose to avoid the fight altogether.

this is only a temporary solution as installing newer & future CUs (cumulative updates) will remove Edge Legacy again and this will have to be repeated each time a new CU is installed
