Interesting quirk with Start -> Apps listing of Microsoft Edge

    Hi all -

    Please see this picture:

Interesting quirk with Start -> Apps listing of Microsoft Edge-edge-1-.jpg

    Look under Apps.

I have Microsoft Edge listed under All Programs and Apps and I don't understand why it is also listed under Apps.
Anyway, note the entry - the Icon is gone and just a stub is left.

Short of uninstalling and reinstalling Edge I would like to know three things:

    1) Why is Edge listed under Apps in the first place?
    2) What has happened to it's Icon?
    3) How can I just remove that one Apps entry for Edge without affecting the entire install of Edge?

I still want Edge to be listed under Programs.

Rather than mess with removing packages, I thought to get some opinions first.

    TIA!

'Legacy Edge' still has a listing somewhere...,

... 'Chromium Edge' over rides it's execution.

Tried so many things today - spent two hours.

    That "stub" is still there.

    Tough one.

You'll most likely have to uninstall Legacy Edge with a third party tool...,

but doing so, reportedly, has adverse affects!

Although MS have 'removed' Legacy Edge with the latest CU and replaced it with the new Edge, the old one is not entirely gone. Some remnants are still in place as I understand that it's still required by the OS.

I believe 21H2 will be the first version of Win10 to have completely removed Legacy Edge and replaced it entirely with Chromium Edge.

Now the new Edge is a conventional .exe, installed in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application", while the Legacy Edge is a UWP app, located in C:\Windows\SystemApps. It is still there in 20H2, even after Legacy Edge was supposedly 'removed' (actually it seems it was just disabled and very well hidden).

The 'Edge' you are seeing in 'Programs' will be the new Chromium Edge, while the one you see under 'Apps' would be the last traces of the Legacy Edge app (and being a UWP app, that's where you should see it). Short of removing all traces of Legacy Edge (probably inadvisable) I think you'll just have to wait for the next major feature update in the second half of 2021.

    Yep.

That's exactly along the lines I was thinking and probably a fresh install at that time would be best.
I'll still play around with it - though I traced the stub to it's origination.

When 21H2 arrives, it should be time for a rebuild.

This just happened within the past day or so. I detest those UWP apps.

    Thanks guys for your help!

Before you do anything rash, I'd wait and see what April's Patch Tuesday brings - it may do the job for you, if this is to be taken at face value....

    Microsoft said:
To replace this out of support application, we are announcing that the new Microsoft Edge will be available as part of the Windows 10 cumulative monthly security update—otherwise referred to as the Update Tuesday (or “B”) release—on April 13, 2021. When you apply this update to your devices, the out of support Microsoft Edge Legacy desktop application will be removed and the new Microsoft Edge will be installed.

Keep the Chromium Edge for awhile and see what tomorrow brings.

@Compumind, the optional Preview update to 19042.906 will do that for you today......

    KB5000842 CU Windows 10 v2004 build 19041.906 and v20H2 19042.906

...as it has done here on the one machine where I installed it. Note that the .exe for legacy Edge as been removed.

    @Bree

The .exe and assets are gone but, I think the manifest is still telling Windows to display a name...,

... and somehow Edge Chromium over rides it?
