MS Edge updates and firewall error every time

    hi,

As usual, edge update and then all firewall rules are broken - this happens all the time when there is an Edge update. can you fix this?

Now when i visit some site the firewall will ask me if i allow access externally to MS Edge. i have already approved this a million times, and changes every time due to different folder name.

it just got updated to Version 89.0.774.57

does anybody have this error as well?

    thanks,
    Gabrio

thanks but it's not the FW having issues imo, and it's just with Edge itself. all other apps are fine. i ran the troubleshooter and couldn't find anything.

Your firewall rules are wrong because you specify wrong executable, to allow edge outbound traffic specify:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe

What do you mean by "external access"? are talking about inbound rules?
    Which firewall do you use?

    rules are correct look:

MS Edge updates and firewall error every time-image.png

yet this always happens when the version number changes, as the folder also change with the version.

you are right, it should always refer ONLY to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe

    but it doesn't

Did you create these rules yourself?
If those rules were made automatically, did you modify them in any way?

You are talking about MS edge chromium right? not legacy edge?

no, haven't created those myself, they have been added automatically. only thing was say OK accept firewall request for private and public networks, etc the usual prompt.

Rules that are made automatically can't be controlled.

If you want stable rules you'll have to create your own.
However do not copy existing rules, instead right click on "Outbound" node and select "New rule".
You can then specify other properties how ever you like, and these modifications will be permanent.

Once you do so, the automatic rules can be removed.

    hi,

i just deleted all rules for Edge on the firewall. For the note i had "Edge" rules under inbound rules. Deleted now.

Now i have done like you said and created "new rule" under outbound. for msdedge.exe

which one do i need to use for this one? have never done it

MS Edge updates and firewall error every time-image.png

first option or the second one? i used the first one - it's added now.

Yes, first option for all rules.

Direction outbound, protocol TCP (name it "Edge HTTP/S").
Enter ports separated by comma: 80, 443

Add second rule same as first one except, protocol UDP, port 443 (name it "Edge QUIC")
Add third rule for edge updates for program:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\EdgeUpdate\MicrosoftEdgeUpdate.exe
protocol TCP, port 443 (name it "Edge Updates")

Optional rules you may want to add are as follows:
to run speed test on speedtest.net with edge you'll need: outbound TCP 5060, 8080 for msedge.exe (name it "Edge Speedtest") and set to disabled by default if you wish.
to be able to visit FTP servers with edge you'll need: outbound TCP 21 for msedge.exe (name it "Edge FTP")

No inbound rules are needed except for "cast to device" and similar.

Ah I guess you need no rules at all then.
