New computer... migrate Windows Live mail to Windows 10 Mail app

I'm doing an upgrade on my mother in laws computer. New mainboard, etc... She was running Windows 10 Pro 64bit, upgraded in place from Windows 7 Pro 64bit. She was using Windows Live Mail as her email client.

Now that we have a fresh installation of Windows 10, I find that there is no Windows Live Mail client that I can restore her account info and mail files to. There is the Mail program that comes with Windows 10.

She needs her email working. Mail won't see any of the data that I've saved from her old machine. I can't install Windows Live Mail.

Can I reinstall Windows Live Mail? If so, how? If not, can Mail use the data files from Windows Live Mail?

    Any help is appreciated!

Hi, you might like to read

for example which I found by searching tenforums for.. yes..

for you. Feel free to look for more.

Note it's not going to be maintained, of course, but if your mother in law likes the familiarity, and would find it difficult to dea with a current client, it may be what you need to do.

Mail? - bear in mind that the Windows Mail app is somewhat limited and in no way as flexible as, say, Thunderbird. It's not possible to export mail from it, for example.

You can still download Windows Live Essentials (which contains WLM inter alia) from a number of places, and I know I did so from here Windows Live Essentials 2012 - Free download and software reviews - CNET Download for a friend back in 2019, when his stopped working (it did, but was fixed). I recall installing on my PC some of the WLE packages to confirm they worked, but cannot be sure I included WLM, and this page Grab an offline copy of Microsoft Windows Live Essentials - gHacks Tech News warns there may be issues. I can confirm that the vn at Download Windows Live Essentials - MajorGeeks is the same size and apparent version (16.4.3528) at that at cnet.

Obviously, I cannot vouch for these downloads - you could make a Macrium Reflect image of the current installation, then try the install, knowing (hoping?) you can easily revert if it goes pear-shaped.

PS my friend's WLM is still working fine...

    Thanks folks!

I was able to download the Windows Live package and get Live Mail installed. I've been trying to get my mother in law to switch to the web interface for email, but she doesn't want to change. She won't have much of a choice soon.
