Can't reinstate email account after clean install

After a clean install of Win10 Version 20H2 (OS build 19042.804):

    1. I have downloaded Firefox (via Internet Explorer) instead of launching Edge.

    2. I have another PC on which the Win10 (same OS build) Email app works fine, so I copied the Email account details across to the reset PC (including IMAP and SMTP server IDs after the simple method failed repeatedly). It keeps telling me it can't find info for that account.

Is the Email app somehow dependent on Edge?

Whether you do 1. and have Firefox is not relevant.
No idea what you actually did in 2. sounds rather dubious.

In the Mail App you just go through the Add Account dialogs.
There are no server details to enter with some Accounts like Outlook Mail.
Others may require a colon and port number after the server name, and various security boxes checking.
The help pages of the Mail Account should give details to fill those boxes.

MS Applications can have common modules.
This can lead to problems with people deleting parts of a Windows 10 install.

I use Edge, and have 6 Email Accounts setup with the Windows 10 Mail App, been around 5 years now with no problems.

Which account is affected? If Gmail, Yahoo or other which uses 2-step authentication then you might need an app specific password.
With the Mail app you usually need to add the port numbers to the end of the server - e.g.: imap.yourisp.com:993:1 smtp.yourisp.com:465:1

    Good to know.
No idea what you actually did in 2. sounds rather dubious.
I copied the account name and password into the Email app on the new install.
This failed for the reason given so I looked in the advanced section and copied the extra info.
    Still failed.

    Yes, that's what I did.

I didn't delete any parts of the install, and I too have never encountered this problem before.

    Thanks for your help Helmut.

It's a POP3/IMAP account with Virginmedia, no 2-step authentication involved.

Yes, it is precisely those port numbers that I included, the only difference being the service provider is ntlworld.

There’s problems with Virginmedia accounts (Virginmedia, Ntlworld, blue yonder etc) which is giving the wrong password message, the potential solution is to change the password on the account. Their forum is full of this same problem

    The settings:
    imap.virginmedia.com:993:1 or pop3.virginmedia.com:995:1
    smtp.virginmedia.com:465:1
    SSL on

    Thanks Bastet.
I wasn't getting a wrong password message but I changed my password just in case, but no luck.

It’s one of those things with VM, one day the email works then the next it doesn’t a it seems to stay that way.
You might also wish to post on their forum:

Thanks Bastet, but I've been doing that too and nobody there seems to have any idea about what's going on.
I think I may have to phone Virginmedia and get somebody to walk me through the setup.

VM do have poor customer service & with the pandemic it has become worse. They’ll most likely tell you to delete the account & set it up again, have you restart the PC or even reset the mail app.
If you do phone then it’s recommended to do so early.

Already done all those things and still getting the same message.
At least I can resort to my old machine for email when I need to.
Thanks for your time and patience.
