    Outlook and Metered Connection?

Hello. I've only posted here a few times, but I'm sure grateful for this Forum, lots of helpful tips and fixes! And I've been helped when I needed it.

I'm using Win 10 Pro, with the 20H2 update. I am current with updates as of 2/9/2021. I have a satellite Internet connection with HughesNet. Lately I have been running out of my data allowance (which resets once a month) 8-10 days before that reset.

Yesterday, wanting to see about monitoring and limiting my Internet data usage, I set my ethernet connection to the modem to a metered connection. I did not open Outlook (2016) after that. This morning when I opened Outlook, I got a message about Outlook detecting a metered connection, with a box to click to ignore it. I clicked there, but Outlook still would not download my email.

So I turned the 'metered connection' feature off. Outlook now works as it did before.

In case it might be a factor, I also installed AdBlock on my two browsers just after setting up the metered connection. Again trying to limit data downloads. I did not uninstall AdBlock.

My question is: Can I use a metered connection and Outlook at the same time? Or is there any reason to? I have modem software that allows me to monitor my usage.

    Thanks in advance! TRF

    TRF,

Try browsing the Office section of the forum
Microsoft Office and 365 - TenForums

    or searching the forum
    Advanced Search - TenForums

This topic has definitely been raised before so you ought to be able to find some advice about it.

I found some claims about a solution - see No method to disable Outlook 365 metered connection warning. but do note that a later post in that thread said that it did not work.
    - I concluded that there was no option but to turn off the metered property.

    Best of luck,
    Denis

Thank you. I am going with your idea here, and I'm turning metering off. Since I can monitor my Internet data usage through software that came with the (satellite) modem, I'll just have to take the time to do that 2-3 times a month.

I did download a utility called Glasswire, GlassWire - Personal Firewall & Network Monitorwhich monitors network activity in real time, now I'll have to study how to interpret the readouts of activity shown in this software. I don't want to get too deep into this 'app,' as Glasswire has an available firewall which, if I activated it, would then possibly create conflicts with the Win Defender firewall. I just don't have the time to get into that; I want this device safe from intrusions, but with the least complicated solutions for that.

    Outlook and Metered Connection?-0210-outlook-metered-connection-warning.jpg

    Hi T R Finlay.

I searched long and hard last year to locate a method to disable that Outlook warning / connection issue. I tried endless tweaks and finally gave up, switching the metered connection to off. I'm on a Wireless Internet connection and strongly prefer to always have the metered connection set to ON. A 4-6GB M$ surprise update can be quite costly and very annoying.

Back then, I did learn that connecting to email servers was successful for Microsoft Exchange servers and other IMAP mail connections. When it was somewhat working (for everything but Gmail) I found it necessary to repeatedly hit the yellow connect button in Outlook after every boot or restart of Outlook.

On a regular basis, the Gmail connection would fail and a password dialogue box would pop up. Entering the password would work sometimes but often I had to restart Outlook or disable the Gmail account. After disabling the two-factor authentication on my Gmail account, the connection was more reliable but still crapped out much too often for my liking.

Jump ahead several months and suddenly it appears to work properly. I haven't bothered with the two-factor authentication again but I've had zero incidents of this type of grief since. Also, I only require to hit the yellow connect button once after a restart/reboot.

    I have the following email services connected to Outlook 365;

    3 Microsoft Exchange accounts (Hotmail & Outlook.com)
    2 IMAP/SMTP (my local ISP & Gmail)

Have you updated your Outlook 2016 recently?
    This update is 05/26/2020 .
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down...aspx?id=101326
I still believe this was a Microsoft bug that they corrected, at least within Outlook 365.

After you click the 'Connect Anyway' button in Outlook, have you then clicked the 'Send/Receive all folders'?

What type of email services (MS Exchange, POP or IMAP) and how many do you have configured in Outlook 2016?

PS; When mine started functioning correctly last Fall (2020) I was using winver 1809 Home.
I presently use 2004 and always on a metered connection.

Yes I did click the 'send/receive' all folders after that message. Still would not connect. I'll look into my Outlook 2016, but I installed it a couple of months after that May 2020 date you note. My email through Outlook is a connection to my ISP (HughesNet). It's a POP type. My other email is through Yahoo, using their web interface.
    Thanks for the help! Tom

You're most welcome Tom. I wish I had more info and a solution but... anything older & Microsoft related is often a gamble.
You may have better luck searching for a fix with Outlook 2016, I was unable to find anything for Outlook 365 and suddenly, it started working. Best of luck and please update if you find a solution. Cheers,

    Michael

    Michael,

I applaud your continuing efforts on this topic.

I had a rather extended trial of Office 2016 [about a year] but I found so many undesirable improvements in it that I reverted upgraded to Office 2007.

    All the best,
    Denis

    Thanks Denis.

I'm confident you understand wanting to fix all these Microsoft features and make them more functional.
