No, you do not need to install it.

Not sure why the feature is there and can't be turned off.

It's the same for Android phones, the YouTube app is just a huge PITA that slows down the process of trying to watch a video. Although, I feel a bit spoiled using Vivaldi for Android set to always use desktop mode.

Just to promote the app, my guess.

FYI: The only app that I use to browse Youtube.

FreeTube - The Private YouTube Client

If setting it to browse via an invidious server there is a list here:

    documentation/Invidious-Instances.md at master . iv-org/documentation . GitHub

Not a recommendation - just what I use.

Could you summarize the benefits over using a browser or VLC to watch YouTube vids?

Better privacy and less distractions. I do have a browser extension to open Youtube videos in PotPlayer but rarely use it.

Thanks for asking this question. I just noticed this thing today and searched for the answer. It's not like it's Needed. it's not like Google doesn't push youtube down our throats every chance they get already.

Thanks Chris, I'm going to try it out.

Although I've adjusted my privacy settings at YouTube to maximize my privacy, I'm confident that they're still syphoning off personal data. To adjust your own settings at YouTube, look here. I was mortified to see that every video I had ever viewed was recorded.

You can delete your viewing history and change the settings such that your personal viewing isn't recorded for all to see. Make no mistake, I'm confident the data is still harvested and sold.

For those of us who are more concerned with our privacy than having our every move tracked, just so we can have the warm and fuzzy feeling associated with 'my YouTube knows what I like', this FreeTube looks great.
