    Vivaldi & security

I do like the Vivaldi browser & was thinking of setting up a Vivaldi account & webmail address, but this is a little concerning & I'd like to know what other's think.

I emailed Vivaldi customer service at support@vivaldi.com & asked:
"I'd like to know, after I create & activate a Vivaldi account, can I remove my Recovery Email & Phone Number?"

This is the response I received:
"The short answer is no. A recovery email always needs to be linked to a Vivaldi account. If there's no recovery email, you won't be able to reset the password, receive import notifications (e.g. service maintenance announcement) & other account related emails.
The phone number is only required when you want to use Vivaldi's webmail & blogging services. To use browser's Sync feature & to post on the Forum, you don't need to verify your number. But once you do verify it, it's not possible to remove the number. We can do it for you, but you'll also lose access to webmail & blogs."

I don't think this is a very good security setup.
Shouldn't/wouldn't import notifications (e.g. service maintenance announcement) & other account related emails go to the user's Vivaldi email account?
And if someone 'broke in' to a user's Vivaldi account, they would have access to that user's other email & their phone number.
Is it just me or is this NOT a security hole?

I can't respond to all your questions, but the second last: if someone manages to log in to your Vivaldi acct and tries to change settings, they should be sent a phone message or confirmation email to your recovery email address. They would not have access to these unless they had managed that separately, so would be unable to confirm their identity, and at the same time you should receive the message or email, and be able to say 'it wasn't me'. So no security hole.

As someone who knows a lot about IT-Security, i can tell you this.

The response they gave you has very little to do with security, it has more to do with account features, i think the person who responded to you got those two mixed up.

Notifications with maintenance, announcement & other account related emails.
Is just that, Notifications and information.
A account should not force a phone number from a user it should be optional, in case of a breach in vivaldi they might involuntary give out the details that you provided including your phone number.
So to require that is just wrong.
As you know very little about the security infrastructure standards they have, trust is not something you should give away, especially to companies.

If you ask me you should not use the sync feature from the browser.
Backup your bookmarks manually, save them on your own drive & use a password manager unless you already have one.

So it's not really a security hole, but lazy development, they could / should have a better way / easier way for the users to manage the account. What they ask for / require is unnecessary.
