AT&T_Yahoo email server security lockout resolve--Helping COVID relati

Brother in Law recovering COVID--not at home. I have his laptop. His email account not sending/receiving since at least November 2020. Email client is desktop Outlook/Windows 10. Email account with AT&T.

His password is good. I'm able to login to his AT&T/Yahoo/Currently mail server and view emails. When AT&T outsourced email servers to Yahoo last year(?), they increased the security level for email client access. I'm sure they sent an email with link instructions to easily address new security--which BIL ignored.

The server error (I don't have right now) is identical to that which I'm seeing on search for those customers that hadn't made the AT&T/Yahoo security fix.

I think I've found the solution on the AT&T forum--Require logon using Secure Password Authentication.

Also something about a Secure Mail Key.

I understand neither. I do not want to screw up someone else's email account/Outlook trying to help. That's why I'm here. I need confirmation of the correct action before I proceed.

    @markg2 -

Good morning. Please take a peek at these resources:

Using Yahoo and AOL accounts in Outlook

How to Access Yahoo Mail With Outlook

If you proceed, make sure you have a complete record of all the prior settings.

Hope that your BIL recovers well.

You have to set up a Secure Mail Key and use that key as the password in the Outlook account profile....see following link
Set Up AT&T Email Settings for Microsoft Outlook 2016 - Email Support
Also take heed of Compumind's advice....keep a record of all prior settings.

    Outlook (2013) settings screenshots/saved.

My view of his AT&T/Yahoo website, server, Account Settings are not the same as linked help image/description this thread (I tested on my machine in addition to his). When Account Security is clicked, the page opens to a worthless text area displaying 'How you sign in' but not a link nor a '+'.

I then clicked on Account Settings which went to MyAT&T, re-entered credentials. I'm 99% certain that the lower left hand option 2 of 2 screenshots that page) 'Secure Mail Key' is the differing but correct location for the intended purpose.

Again, before moving, I want to close the remaining 1% and confirm that's the correct move.

My screens look slightly different (could be that we're in two different parts of country and hence different old Ma Bells), but this is what you're looking for

Click on "Manage Secure Mail Key" and generate a 16 character key for the email account. You then use this key as your password in your Outlook email account settings.

Automatic forwarding in free Yahoo Mail to be discontinued

Just for info should the need arise, Yahoo mail can no longer be forwarded to a third party acct like gmail, etc.
