Yes, the Gmail app is acting basically as a desktop email client.
But I am not sure, how to set it up to handle mailto links.

We still don't know what your default email program setting is, if any. You're showing the wrong screen. From the screen you showed, click "Default Apps" over along the left side and screenshot that you sent. Then, if nothing is shown (no surprise there), click on Choose an App to see what's available.

I suspect you got this notice...
... trying to invoke Send to > Mail recipient
eM Client is the only app I know of that will set that all up for you automatically!
