    Open with Chrome menu option questions


    Today I noticed that when I use the Open with menu for .docx files, Google Chrome is there as an option.

    Just to test it, I chose Chrome to open a .docx file and what happened? It "downloaded" (copied) the file to the Downloads default folder!

    I thought it would perhaps open the file via Google Docs inside a browser window, but it didn't.

    My first question: is there a .docx-Google Docs-Chrome association that may be lost or corrupted somehow?

    Second question: if there is no such association as above, how the heck did Chrome went to the Open with menu for .docx files?

    Third: that menu option was created by Chrome or by Windows?

    I know I can remove that option from the Open with menu by editing the Registry. But I can't help but wondering why such surprising strange stuff keep happening now and then in Windows.

    Odd- I have Chrome installed, but not listed for docx. However, 7-zip is- which seems strange. Never noticed that before.

    This free program makes changing that easy:

    But in your case it seems that Firefox is there instead of Chrome. Have you tested it the way I did with Chrome?

    Well, the point is that if you run that program on YOUR PC, presumably you will see Chrome there. Using that program then provides a convenient way to remove it.

    I don't think I need to test anything or change anything on my PC in this instance.

    The ideia behind my last question is about trying to figure out why and how browsers get associated to that file type.

    So I thought that if you'd try to open a .docx with Firefox it maybe would get the same result I had with Chrome.

    But it was just for testing. Anyway, I'll check it myself here (install Firefox and see how it goes as to the Open with stuff). Thanks again. Case closed.

    It would be interesting to know why these programs are added to the Open With list, but that's different to them being associated with that file type. And indeed, why is Firefox there...

    Actually if you look at the registry it can get even more puzzling:

    I can't remember now where, but this very forum has a fix to file association issues that one can download by file type.

    Maybe that thread can shed some light on what we're discussing here.
