As the urls work in other browsers then you can set one as the default browser but continue to use Edge when you want to manually open a browser.

How old is your wife’s PC?
Supposedly if a PC can run Windows 8 then it can run Windows 10 but imo this is not always to case.
Was there any error message when you tried updating the device or was it that the PC became slow or had other problems?

I will accidently find the problem with the e-mail links.

Her PC is barely three years old. Our two eMachines we got in 2010 and they run fine and update okay.

Are you running any third party antivirus software?
I hope you discover the answer.

Strange if it won’t run 2004 at least.
I can only think there’s a problem with a driver or old peripheral which MS may have fixed by now.
Did you try to remove all external devices (apart from mouse & keyboard if fitted), disable any third party antivirus (if any) when you tried updating?

I started using Norton utilities in 1975 (phone line) and except for a year using McAfee's I have used Norton's and recently Live Lock since many Moons ago. Sometimes, when I remember to, I turn it off for updates, but it never seems to be any different.

One problem was a couple Dell updates would not run, so maybe a driver or so is not quite right. She just told me not to worry about her PC and I will obey; after 56 years I learned to obey

Often the self protection module can affect Windows (mainly system restore) although it shouldn’t affect Live Mail as it no longer has an email scanning feature which would be the only thing I could think of.

Yes. If she’s happy then that’s good. :)

I wonder if the Edge Stable may be the problem? Was thinking of replacing it with another version then maybe revert back to Stable. I found two registry entries; one for just Edge and another for Edge.Stable. Maybe when I link rom WLM it tries to pickup both Edge's. The problem is so weird anything is possible.

    That’s possible.
There’s the old Edge & the new Edge, if the old Edge is still there or there’s an insider’s version installed then LMail may be getting confused.
In theory though the new Edge should’ve overwritten the original version.

If true then the old Edge should be deleted somehow. I will pursue that angle.....somewhow :)

I think so. At my age things get under my skin so it is easy to walk away. It must be some driver, BIOS or other problem that is too much work so she can live with 1909. Thanks.
    Hi,
Best I've found is use the media creation tool for the iso now I suppose it's 2009/20H2 build
After you get the iso saved to your desktop right click it and select properties
If you see a Unblock button use it and apply and okay.

Disconnect from the internet kind of important
    Then open the iso
Right click setup.exe and use Run as administrator off the context menu list.

Save personal files and apps and see what happens.

If you'd rather get a 2004 iso use this app for it
Microsoft Windows and Office ISO Download Tool
