Sounds likely you have to be logged in then, at least I know why now.

There's an extension in the edge store i have just used called 'blank tab' it completely clears the page, also gets rid of the Bing search box, just seems a shame we have to use these things for something I consider a basic setting for a browser.

I did download a new tab redirect before, but it was from chrome store and i decided to not use it. Thanks for your time everyone, for now it's sorted via an extension, but I really hope Microsoft after having made such a great browser don't go and mess it up with crap labelled as 'for my convenience' !

I can not use any of the suggestions and I would like to remove the weather. Any other suggestions?
