Microsoft Edge browser wont work after upgrading SSD

    Hi,

I've just upgraded to a larger SSD (by cloning it), and since then Edge wont work. I use Chrome for most searches but find Edge is better for news searches.

    - I can't uninstall and re-install it because Microsoft doesn't allow that (very annoying).
    - if I search for the executable in file manager, it's nowhere to be found.
    - If I type 'Edge' in the toolbar search box, it finds it, but shows a generic icon, not the correct icon, and it wont open
    - I know it exists somewhere because, before I re-made Chrome my default, a web link fired it up
    - I've tried to 'Repair' it, and also 'Reset' it in Program Manager - made no difference
    - I've used a Registry utility to clean up any registry issues - and it all seems to be fine, but made no difference
    - Windows 10 itself appears to think that everything is fine too - not showing any system errors - and completely up to date
    - I ran the System File Checker Tool - sfc /scannow - and everything is fine

Surely there must be an easy way to get this browser to work?

    Thanks.

    SPEC:
    - Windows 10 - version 2004 (OS Build: 19041.572)

    - Intel Core i7 3770K Processor 3.50 GHz
    - Asus P8B75-M LX Basic Micro ATX Motherboard
    - 16GB Corsair PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3 Memory (2 x 8GB sticks), Channel # Dual, DRAM Freq 798.2 MHz,
    - Samsung 860 series: 1Tb SSD (upgraded from original 250Gb SSD)
    - 3 other (mechanical) hard drives

    @tallonius

Here is how to remove Edge Chromium. Microsoft will automatically re-install it in a day or so.

How to remove the new Microsoft Edge if uninstallation is blocked - gHacks Tech News

    ******************************************************************************************

IF, for any reason, you want to prevent Edge Chromium from re-installing itself again....

Browse to the following location in the Registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft

Quick tip: On Windows 10, you can now copy and paste the path in the Registry's address bar to quickly jump to the key destination.

Right-click the Microsoft (folder) key, select New, and click on Key.

Name the key EdgeUpdate and press Enter.

Right-click the newly created key, select New, and click on DWORD (32-bit) Value.

Name the key DoNotUpdateToEdgeWithChromium and press Enter.

Double-click the newly created DWORD and set the value from 0 to 1.

    Click the OK button.

After you complete these steps, the Microsoft Edge based on Chromium won't download and install automatically on your computer.

BOTH of these methods work. I've used them myself on Windows 10 Home version 19041.572

Thanks Ghot, but that solution needs a file path that doesn't exist on my machine:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application

Did you try just downloading Edge Chromium, and installing it?

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/edge

The icon you see at that link is the new Edge Chromium. The old regular Edge looks like this...

When I read your OP, I assumed you were talking about Edge Chromium. You can remove the regular Edge, but it will break Windows Update, :/

Edge Chromium will, more or less replace the regular Edge.

Thanks Ghot - I hadn't realised that Edge Chromium existed and was the new version. After trying and failing to get that to download/install, I tried again after re-booting and it installed fine and is now working!

    Thanks again!
