Microsoft Edge losing file association with MHTML files

I have Edge browser installed (Canary channel), and I'm facing an issue where the file association with MHTML files is being repeatedly lost. MHTML format, which employ .mht and .mhtml extensions, combines HTML code and all its resources, such as images and Java applets, in a single file. Sometimes I want to download a web page for offline view or for making a PDF from it.

I associate MHTML files with Edge, by manually browsing to Edge executable path (...\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge SxS\Application), because Edge does not appear on "Open With" context menu. As shown in the attached image, the file associations do exist, but after the next Windows startup, they're lost. Is there a way to make this file association stick?

edit: I'm aware you can rename .html files to .mht or .mhtml, but it's a workaround and not a proper solution

Edge can't open .mht or .mhtml files.

You have a choice of Internet Explorer or Word.

Just saved a .mhtml file from Edge and opened it just fine.

Problem is I don't know how to associate mhtml files to always be opened by Edge.

Option Two, Step 4 in this tutorial.

Look for another app on this PC = Allows you to browse to and select an app to open this file with.
Choose Default Apps in Windows 10

Browse for another app and look for C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe.

After which, 'Open with > Choose another app' will show that Edge is now the default....

Glad you found it for yourself. On other good thing about adding a default app in this way is that not only does it associate the app with the file extension, but it also adds it to the choices available in Settings. You can now swap the .mhtml association back and forth between IE and Edge whenever you like.

    Hello @lasher,

Just for information, there is also a link for Choose Default Apps by Protocol in Settings > Apps > Default Apps [ Link at the bottom ] if you ever need it. Here are the first few . . .
