PDF files and Microsoft Edge Issue

    Hi All,
Normally you can associate a file type with any app that works with that type of file. I have always changed a file type of a app when I do a clean install of Windows or install a different app. I recently installed Perfect PDF 9 Editor so I could read and edit any PDF file. I set the default app to Perfect PDF 9 and all seemed well. I right-click on a PDF file and select open with Perfect PDF 9 and check the box to open always. When it opened a popup came up and asked if I wanted to make Perfect PDF 9 my default. I clicked yes and all seemed fine. closed that PDF file and opened another and get same popup. I go to app default settings and Edge is set to open a PDF. I have tried a lot of google instructions on how to set the PDF file to associate to Perfect PDF 9 but every time Windows resets it back to Edge.
I have even went into edge and set the site permissions to externally but nothing will stop Windows from resetting it back to Edge.So for days now I have to always right-click a pdf and open with Perfect PDF or if I forget it will open in Edge.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I have that installed. My default prog was Sumatra - perfectly stable.

I have just used Open With to set Perfect PDF... as default, then checked Settings. Stable so far.

Do you have any Adobe products installed, or an old version of Winzip?

Using this program you can readily see more detail:

    - and verify the change was written to the registry
Also note that different programs are assigned for different purposes.

What leads to a pdf opening in Edge after having assigned it to Perfect Pdf? Log off/on? Restart?

I happen to be running as admin.

I am using a local admin account and this is the first time I have had this problem. all the other apps assigned properly. I changed the MS Edge to Perfect PDF in the default apps again and then restarted and the Perfect PDF was still assigned to .pdf so I checked in the registry with "filetypesman" and yes Perfect had changed it to Perfect PdF. I left the registry open to see if it would change back to MS Edge. the first pdf file i opened yesterday with Perfect PDF opened in Perfect PDF but I still got the prompt the app was not default. (Note: the registry setting did not change from Perfect PDF. So I opened the 2nd pdf file and it automatically opened with MS Edge. Go back into default apps and MS Edge is assigned to .pdf.
This is crazy. I don't understand why MS Edge is changing this when the registry is showing .pdf is assigned to Perfect PDF. As soon as I open the pdf file the pdf extension is automatically set back MS Edge. I don't have any Adobe or Winzip installed. I do have WinRAR installed. I always use WinRAR. This one got me.
    Thanks for the replies

Thanks- what is your full Windows build? The forum prompted you for that when you wrote your initial post.

Do you have the new Edge installed?

By way of contrast, set the pdf default to some other program, and see if the same change occurs. I.e. is the reversion exclusively related to Perfect PDF?

Strange.... I type a reply and select "post quick reply" and it don't post.
    @dalchina
    Windows 10 Pro ver,2004 Build 19041.488 and Edge ver. 85.0.564.44 (64-bit)
I changed it to Firefox and it opens every time with firefox. So it seems Perfect PDF Editor I just installed a few days ago is not compatible with Win 2004 or there is a bug in it. I will look for another PDF editor and try that and reply here.

    thanks

There aren't many free ones.. if you find one, I'm interested. Plenty of readers of course.

I have no idea about Edge build numbers.. mine's 44.18362..... (as you see I'm on 1903- the numbers relate to the O/S build) - so is that the new Chrome-based Edge or the original?

The mention of Chromium indicates that's the new Edge. 'Edgium' some called it.

Although each time I open Edge I get a popup to 'switch to Chrome for Windows" not gonna bother that right now

Also the Perfect PDF Editor is a time-limited giveaway app that is still available to get. Maybe I will wait a few days and see if another editor will be posted on the giveaway sites to test. If I find another soon I will remove the Perfect PDF Editor.

    cheers
