When I set google to the default search in setttings/privacy/address bar, Edge crashes when I enter the 2nd character in the URL field. When I change it back to bing it works correctly.

Post what you're attempting to enter in the address box.
I have just started having the exact same problem. Re-installed Edge but problem persists. It doesn't matter what I type in the address box. I can use the other browser options but not Google.

I found out it's a problem with "Show me search and site suggestions using my typed characters".
Keeping Google as default search engine and unticking that, will prevent it from crashing.
However I need that feature.
It's global, it seems: Edge started randomly crashing/closing : Windows10
I have the same versions of software. "Win10 V 19041.388 Edge 84.0.522.49" and I just today started having the same problem. With Google as the default search engine when I start typing in the address bar, as soon as I type the 2nd character, Edge crashes. It doesn't matter what I try typeing. Any characters it fails when typing the 2nd character. Edge does not fail when Bing is the default search engine. FYI I also have Google Chrome Version 84.0.4147.105 installed. It does not have this problem.
For me, both Google and Bing search work from the address bar in Edge 84.0.522.49, with search and site suggestions on, or off.
Windows 10 Pro 1909.

I'm using Edge 84.0.522.49 and it's not working at all, same for hundreds of other users.
Works with suggestions OFF or without Google as default search engine.

There are so many new users here posting it so it's clearly a widespread issue. Seems to only affect Google search/suggestions. Hopefully Microsoft, or google, will resolve the issue soon. In the meanwhile you can change it to something else other than Google, or turn off 'show me search and site suggestions using my typed characters'.
