    Live Mail 2012 Screwed Up After v2004 Update

    Well, I just installed v2004 and wouldn't you know it my Windows Live Mail was erased and now after installing it back all my messages will not display. It is never ending the incompetent so-called software engineers at MS; the old ones must have all retired and left it to the idiots.

    Can anyone help me restore my Windows Live Mail 2012? Yeah, guess I don't spend enough on new and "improved versions, huh?

    E-Mail clients were Outlook Express up to WinXP, went to Mail in WinVista, discontinued in Win7 then came the free Live Essentials through 2012 then discontinued. [Even IncrediMail seems to have been discontinued.] One can still get some versions of Microsoft Office that include Outlook, last I have is Office 2013. From reading various posts and listening to talk a lot of folks are using online/Webmail apps such as Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail and Outlook.com [note the exact name on that one]. Outlook.com was intended to replace Hotmail and seems it has been done, either link goes to a single site [I have both a Hotmail and Outlook.com account]. And there's still Thunderbird and another choice is the SeaMonkey browser which include an E-Mail Client.

    I find much lacking in each of those e-mail programs; I still like Windows Live Mail. I will restore my Widows 10 back to1909 and just let MS hang their updates out to dry. Just sick and tired of their updates. I updated my wife's PC the conventional way, "Widows Update" that took 6 hours. So I went with the ISO route, only took 4 hours, that of course wiped out programs and my tweaks. Now I will just block their stupid updates like one of my desktops that still works great on 1803..Stupid MS.

    As Windows Live mail is unsupported don't be too surprised to find one day it does not connect to your Mail server.

    I've already seen instances where the security has changed, server side, and the Live client does not connect.

    Think there is at least one thread on this forum where Live wouldn't connect and I had it with one of my clients.

    I know it still works with other servers as some of my clients do not wish to change.

    4 years ago you were told that Windows Live Mail 2012 would no longer be supported.

    I had to change as well, and I did, so stop moaning, the later you leave it the more difficult it becomes.

    5 years ago I looked at various alternatives and tried them out.
    In the end settling on the Mail App in Windows 10, essentially it has been that for 6 yr, the first 2 yr were in parallel with WLM 2012.

    The latter was not as great as some say, 2 of my 6 Accounts never worked properly with WLM 2012, Now all 6 do with the Windows 10 Mail App.
    OK the look is not to my taste, but it works reliably, which is a major good point.

    I used Thunderbird and it worked good, so maybe I'll switch to that. MS is trying their best to get rid of me.

    You are using old software. You'll have to update or your software will become obsolete. You also have to be really careful using old software because it's not supported anymore and so you're in deep water without a life jacket. You're not a developer I'm guessing? So you can't maintain something you don't understand. And the longer you delay the more you're dealing with software that is not built for the times we live in. Changes are happening all the time and email clients specifically are always advancing towards being better, just like browsers. Compare Firefox in 2012 to Firefox in 2020 and you're looking at a CONSIDERABLE amount of difference across the board. You wouldn't want to use Firefox from 2012 on the internet, not unless you liked to take risks and have a target painted on your back.

    You should always stay up to date with the latest software. This doesn't mean you have to keep using it if you don't like it but it does mean that no matter what you use you should be always going for the latest stable version. This will fix many bugs, improve performance, security and it will be updated reguarly.

    Thunderbird is a good choice.

    Thanks to our German colleague, WLMUSER2004
    The actual response on the Microsoft forum follows:

    https://answers.microsoft.com/de-de/...2-7fe6fdba642c

    Simple fix, Worked for me! WLM gets corrupted during the update.
    Regedit:
    In the registry under

    Computer \ HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows Live Mail

    Create these 3 DWORD entries (were not available for me) or change to 1 if they exist

    RecreateFolderIndex = 1
    RecreateStreamIndex = 1
    RecreateUIDLIndex = 1

    Restart Windows Live Mail. Then the message display goes back to normal for me and the 3 values in the registry are reset to 0. Can be left as it is.

    Fix worked for me too. Thanks BigM and your colleague.

    You are using old software.
    When I installed W10, Windows Essential was the recommended install as a replacement for the Outlook Express e-mail client. Even if development is discontinued, it shouldn't be obsolete, I does everything I need. I don;t understand why we should change of software every 5 years.
