Some how "Microsoft Edge" got installed on pc

You said it yourself primitive. When you want to destroy and erase something you don't go about a technical solution. You smash it to bits, you throw it in acid, you dump it deep at sea. There is no elaborate software to fully remove Edge without corrupting the system and disabling other features. You can take a registry change or group policy, be my guest. Try it for yourself. Install a program and then change the path and then run the executable. See what happens.

The only issues it causes is if there are dependencies on that software for other things to run. If certain software cannot be found then process aborted, or something similiar. Edge doesn't affect the rest of the system if it's disabled. It's not like you are interfering with system files. You're making a path to an executable obsolete. It's as simple as that.

The first place Windows will look is in the registry and GPO but how can it factor in a potentially unpredictable new path name? If you changed the path completely so that even a super precise regex couldn't find it Windows is still not finding the executable because hey, you've hidden the treasure.

Hi artic, after 3 pages of stuff and no comments from you the OP, I thought I'd ask exactly what you were looking to accomplish? How has Edge messed up these programs and what are they? Another member may have found a solution while using these same programs.

Unfortunately, uninstalling Edge or any other program that is deeply embedded into Windows would likely provide endless grief and not likely survive a feature update.

Has the presence of Edge just become an irritant when Windows attempts to manipulate how you make use of your PC? I know it drove me nuts until I found a solution that worked flawlessly for me. In post #3, mTaylor0248603 has presented a solution for Windows 10 Pro and mine is directed towards Home users with a Chrome-based browser or Firefox.

I use Edge Deflector which redirects Cortana, links and context menu searches to use my preferred browser.

I use both these extensions on 3 PCs at home and have installed them on several others without any problems, zero issues. That said, both these extensions are a few years old and not maintained. A new and current solution (26 March 2020) has been developed by Marc Guiselin. Chrometana Pro.

I don't believe that Chrometana Pro is compatible with Firefox although one of the older updates suggests it might be. I do know that Firefox users have successfully used Foxtana Pro to accomplish the same fix for both Bing and Edge.
