To me the bottom line is that Edge was/is designed to replace Internet Explorer which at times has had quite similar issues. Harkening back to 1997 brings to mind that Microsoft/Bill Gates bought about $145Million dollars worth of Apple stock, part of the agreement was Microsoft Office for Apple and Internet Explorer. So the competition keeps going on. The undercurrent of the deal was to keep Apple afloat while keeping the powers-that-be away from the idea of creating a monopoly. Yeah, I was building computers back then.
I hope that doesn't happen since I use the excellent program MS Money (discontinued c. 2005) which relies on IE for operation

If you're running an edition of Windows 10 that allows you to set local group policies (such as Pro, Education or Enterprise) you can prevent Microsoft Edge from running at startup by configurating the following two policies:

    • Allow Microsoft Edge to pre-launch at Windows startup, when the system is idle, and each time Microsoft Edge is closed

Enable the above policy and configure pre-launch to prevent pre-launching.

    • Allow Microsoft Edge to start and load the Start and New Tab page at Windows startup and each time Microsoft Edge is closed

Enable the above policy and configure tab preloading to prevent tab preloading.

Then restart the PC for the changes to take effect, that should stop Microsoft Edge from running in the background automatically.
Those policy options appear under Computer Configuration and User Configuration. Do you change the group policy options for Edge in both?

The ones under User Configuration is for if you want the polices to apply only to the current user account, and the ones under Computer Configuration is if you want the polices to apply to all users on the PC.

I haven't the slightest idea what you're talking about here! Also, do you seriously think that renaming a folder is going to make the TC understand anything about how Edge works or Windows for that matter? IMO if he wanted a deeper understanding of anything to do with this situation he would have researched and gotten the answer and knowledge himself.
I think it's a really good idea to teach people to not view their computers and the software on it as being the decision maker. Much of our problem today is the fact that people are practically owned by their technology because they think it's more intelligent than them and makes the best decisions. You can take back that control by having a basic understanding of how things work. You don't need a degree in computer science, just knowledge of where things are, how they run, what they talk to and why etc

Hi Steve, could you possibly utilize this Chrome extension to run MS Money?

I'm not sure what you mean, how do people allow technology to make decisions for them? Are you talking about someone with an iphone saying "hey Siri! Where should I have lunch today?" and then going to what ever place Siri suggests? For example. Because even in that example, Siri (a piece of software) mandate where the guy would eat, well not exactly anyway. The guy was indecisive and used Siri to he with his decision making. That very different to saying that Siri was the decision maker in that situation.

That's like saying that people think that Knowledge itself is smarter than they are, because that's exactly what there devices grants you at your very finger tips.....knowledge! How you interpret it is entirely up to you.

Give a man a fish and he can eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he can feed himself for a lifetime. Big difference between quick fixes and longterm solutions. You're contradicting yourself with every reply as you're basically arguing with fundamental truths in the world we live in and trying to change them to suit your own opinion. The reality is and always has been you can patch over things or you can learn how they work and fix them. It's up to you if you have to keep resorting to Google for things you could learn by actually absorbing yourself in areas of study that encompass what you want to learn and more. Pressing a button in GPO does not make you technically gifted.

You keep accusing me of stuff without actually proving any proof, evidence or examples. You're talking but you seem to have nothing to say.

Thanks - Money is closely integrated with IE so I doubt this will work. I might try it and report back.

@supermammalego I think your suggestion is less than optimal. First of all there is no guarantee that Windows does not simply re-install Edge with an update when it realizes that the Edge path is missing. I would also say that renaming a path to stop a program from running is a very primitive method that is very likely to cause issues. I would take a registry change or a group policy any day over crudely renaming a path. And that's also my recommendation for the OP, if you own Windows 10 Pro use the group policy editor to stop Edge from auto starting.
