How to stop Microsoft Edge from running

I went Settings/Apps& Features/Microsoft Edge/Advance Options and turned them all off. However it must still be running because when I clean my temporary files there are more than 100 entries from Microsoft Edge. How do I shut of Microsoft Edge?

This tells how to turn it and it's apps, running in the background, off: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...7-95be9130125a

Microsoft won't hand you the easy answer to this question as they want you to keep their browser installed and preferably active on the system. For a while they've been wrestling with users who have found ways to disable it and remove it when Microsoft enforced new methods for ensuring it remained on the system. The only way to stop Edge from running is to pretty much kill Edge altogether. Because Microsoft have baked Edge into the system it means it's 'always on' regardless of whether you think you've done stuff to shut it off. So that means you have to either not want to use Edge at all and stop it from running altogether, or deal with the background processes and everything else.

If you do want to stop Edge completely you can navigate to C:\Windows\SystemApps and find the folder Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe. Now, you have to make sure Edge is not running for this next step because you cannot rename a folder if files are being used inside of that folder. So go to Task Manager and then find Edge and end the task. Quickly go back to Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe folder and rename it to something else. You can add a few words at the end or numbers etc. When you do this the path to Edge becomes invalid. Windows will call on files in that folder to run Edge but because the folder is now called something else it will not be able to complete those actions.

The end result is Edge does not start nor run in the background. There is another technique that involves altering permissions so that you take ownership of the folder and all of it's contents. With this ownership you can modify the folder and it's content to become read-only which means no other permissions (write, execute) can happen while the folder is in a read-only state. This means Edge cannot start because it does not have the correct permissions to run and communicate with the system correctly.

I think the first method should work fine though. If you need the other method just let me know and I'll find you a link to a comprehensive guide. Seeing as you're messing with permissions and making changes that can rebound if you select the wrong folder or remove permissions from a user etc it's best to follow a guide that sets everything out easily and precisely.

These are the two main ones to stop Edge. First one use GPEDIT to modify the appropriate registry entry and supplies a .reg option if using Home Edition and GPEDIT is not available. These are preferred to permissions changes and messing with Windows Apps directory.

I think you are exactly right about Microsoft`s intention. I do not want to use either Edge nor Cortana. Thank you for your help. So far I renamed Microsoft.MicrosftEdge_8 wekyb3d8bbwe to Microsoft.MicrosftEdge_8 wekyb3d8bbweNLN
    and I renamed Microsftedge Development ToolsClient_8 wekyb3d8bbwe to _8 wekyb3d8bbweNLN
    could not change Microsoft. Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy.
Here is what My cleaner shows.

Only problem is, at some later update stage, Microsoft can throw it back to sqaure one and you have to start all over again.

I think a lot might depend on where you live. Several years ago, the EU screwed Microsoft well and good for the "forced" imposition of Media Player on users, so much so that European editions 'N' version came with an opt out.

In later years (2009), MS had to agree to allowing users to install a browser other than IE. In 2013 the EU fined MS again for not fully implementing those options.

Outside of the EU, I suspect you/we are screwed ... if MS has the half-baked notion of in-baking Edge, that's it. They'll keep resurrecting it no matter what the user does.

Microsoft really know how to p1ss users off .... Cortana, Bing and Edge (well, the old/original Win 10 version anyway). You'd've thought they would have learnt with Mr. Clippy. But it appears not.

Cortana, Edge and Bing I don't want any of them. Microsoft is not making it easy but I think I will find how to get what I want.

Just be very careful with all the hacking and chopping. If you do not have a good system image backup in place prior to taking a chainsaw to the code, you may have problems. Just common sense advice. Take it or leave it.

I have tried to adopt good backup procedures, not sure how well I have done - please advise if I should do something different.

I don't feel comfortable backing-up to a web server that I have no control over. I use a USB hard drive to store my backup files. One problem I encountered doing this was the USB hard drive broke because I dropped it. So I replaced it with a padded one and dropped it and it broke. I discovered the DTR through a USB 3 is 10 times faster than through a USB 2.O adapter. I am using WD My Passport 2626 1TB.

Every other month I move my latest backup from one USB hard drive to another then I remove the backups from one and continue backing-up to it. I usually end the day by running CCleaner, Windows Update and backing up with Macrium Reflect.
I would like to create a backup routine that works automatically during off-hours, possibly to a web server. What do you advise?

I purchased a license to use Macrium Reflect Home edition backup program. It makes an intelligent backup, that means it only backs-up sectors that have data. I bet the Windows backup routine works that way now but it didn't at the time I bought Macrium. When I started making backups I initially made an image of the entire drive, then I switched to making an image of the System partition, now I have reverted back to making an image of the entire drive. What do you advise?

My internal hard disk is a 500GB SSD. I partition it into drive C and D and C is about 100 GB. If I run out of space on C I use Acronis Disk Director to move the partition. Anyway I thought I might start backing up the system partition to the Cloud every night. Wht do you recommend?
