Windows 10 mail. Do I HAVE to have a MS account?

Tired of ThunderBirds old UI look, so thought I would try Windows Mail. I really want to keep my "local" account however. So I keep getting the error shown. Is there any way to get Windows 10 mail to work with a local rather then a MS account? Yes, I'm one of those "privacy nuts". Using version 1909 Win 10. Also getting: "your (email addy) account settings are out of date".

Probably not the wisest of choices for an alternative .. although I agree with your sentiments about Thunderbird, even though I'm still a user myself.

But I also use eMClient with which I'm more than happy. Worth a try, over Windows Mail.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I wouldn't touch EmClient with a 10 foot toothpick after reading a little of there privacy policy. Here I thought Windows was bad, good grief.

Windows 10 mail. Do I HAVE to have a MS account? = No.

And stop listening to the tin-hat world where any and everything is spying on you. You live that world and you'll never be comfortable using anything but a string and a can.

BTW if you have a smartphone, use Google, or any social media app, Microsoft is the least of your worries

I used W10 Mail for a while without a M$ account. Our e-mail is supplied by our ISP and I had no issues getting Mail to connect to the e-mail server. After putting up with Mail’s slow speed and inability to print an e-mail, I replaced Mail with Thunderbird.

Wish I knew how you did it. All the vids and websites I've visited said it will never "sync", hence, no mail, without an account. Mail keeps popping up either "out of date" or "not synced" in the notification toasts. I may be stuck with TBird I guess.

You need to have an account, mail will not work without one, the email does not need to be an account with microsoft,

What email service are you using?,
    What protocol are you using?
Does the email service have a webmail option and if so is this working?

Since I'm using a Microsoft Account with Windows, I can't test this, but from reading this how-to article it says....

In Windows 10, Microsoft has lifted this arbitrary limitation and you can use included apps like Mail, Maps, and Music without a Microsoft account. However, all the online features that allow you to sync your data and purchases between your devices will require a Microsoft account. Try to access such features in some apps and you’ll be prompted to add a Microsoft account.
It's just you won't be able to sync the data. Source: All the Features That Require a Microsoft Account in Windows 10

It's not even clear from Microsoft - Set up email in the Mail app for Windows 10 whether you actually need a "Microsoft Account" to use the mail app. It says...

If you log on to Windows 10 using a Microsoft account with an Outlook.com, Live, Hotmail, or MSN address, that account is added to the Mail and Calendar apps. You can add that and many other email accounts to the Mail and Calendar apps to start sending and receiving email and creating and managing events.
Is there something more clearly definitive somewhere? I guess one could setup a local account and try it

The statement from MS is a little, (Lot ) confusing, but I've always read it as that the MS ID is only required to use the synchronization of Data between multiple accounts Via the Microsoft system. If you use a third party Mail service this will (assuming use of IMAP), automatically synchronise all the mails anyway, obviously using POP3 would have the issues that all clients have due to that protocol's limitations.

I also have Microsoft accounts on all my systems so cannot check myself, but I wonder what would happen if you created a Microsoft account used it to setup the Mail app and then deleted it, this should not be needed unless the microsoft system itself is flawed but that could be possible

Yep, that's the way I read it.

Agree; and why one should be using IMAP (but that's a different argument).

Hmmm... that's a good question; especially if the app "doesn't include" your Microsoft account's email address.

    Thanks Nigel.
