W10 Mail Won't Print Emails...

I recently installed W10 Mail and Calendar and all works well except print from Mail. I select Print from the drop down menu and the print window opens. It identifies the attached printer with all of the correct format options. The printer is obviously on and is set as the default printer for Windows. When the Print button is clicked, the window closes and nothing happens after that. The files in the printer's queue are empty, so Mail must not be communicating with the printer or sending the print to the printer. The printer has the latest drivers installed and all other apps. will print to the printer (Epson Artisan 837) just fine and always have. Windows Live Mail will also print with no issues, but we don't use that anymore due to issues with e-mails from some social media platforms. I've searched the forum for this problem, but found no relevant thread. Suggestions welcomed. Puzzled in Ohio.

Saw printer works for other apps but I would still recommend a re-install of printer.


Are you getting a little printer icon in Notification area, maybe hidden. If there does that printer have a queue?

In settings > devices > printers and scanners are you letting Windows decide default or have you forced your Epson as default.

Nothing appears in the notification area. The printer does have a queue, but there is never anything there no matter where you look at it (settings, dev. manager, etc.). The printer is set as the system default printer and I changed that from letting Windows decide earlier. Today, I changed the option in the Mail print popup window and turned the slide bar for "let the app change my printing preferences" from OFF to ON. I had turned the option off when I started trouble shooting this issue. Now, Mail will print to the printer just fine. Not sure what really fixed it, except that turning that option OFF and ON, plus turning the default printer OFF and ON, and a reboot may have corrected the problem. Many thanks for the help.

Annnnnd now it's not working again. Same issue as before.

I restarted the system. Same result.
I removed the printer, rebooted, and reinstalled the printer, checked for current driver, and made it the default Windows printer. Same result. Very frustrated. May have to use a different e-mail app., I guess.

Just finished reading a 4 year long thread on MS support pages about this exact problem and have come to the conclusion (like many others) that this problem is an internal Mail programming issue, MS fixes/work arounds won't work, MS will not fix it, and doesn't care that it won't work.

What about Thunderbird or one of the Admin recommendations

Yeah, I’ll be researching the options. Just have to find one that SWMBO likes.

Had me going there, had to look that one up.

I'm sure SWMBO will like the one that prints.

I have some accounts on Thunderbird. Seems to do all the normal mail stuff. It is a Mozilla product so a reasonable name.

I installed Thunderbird today and it looks like a winner. Unfortunately, the export/import tool would not install (corrupt file messages) and didn’t support v.68 of TB. We didn’t have that much mail stored under W10 Mail, so I did a work around by moving the contents of a local stored W10 mail folder to W10 Inbox, and syncing with the ISP’S server. When TB synced with the ISP server, I moved the newly arrived mail items to the appropriate folder in TB. May sound complicated, but for the amount of mail items we had, it didn’t involve finding the W10 files, converting the messages into another file format, and then using an import tool to get them into TB. And TB prints mail! A happy wife is a happy life. I’ll be uninstalling W10 Mail and Calendar next week.

Sounds like you are keeping some of your mail only on your device.

If so you need to backup your mail.

Think you will find TB stores everything about your setup in a default folder down appdata path that can be missed by some people.

IMAP allows you to keep all mail on server, in folders, and they backup. It also allows you access to all mail from any device.

If you are storing mail, that is only available on this specific device, we can discuss how to move this folder to a better location that can be part of backup path. (Like the documents library)
