Just throwing this out. Have you tried a Reset of FF thru the Troubleshooting?

My profiles.ini file has some subtle differences from your layout and I don't know if it makes a difference. Attached is a copy of mine. Perhaps you can spot something. I have copied a bunch of the files in from my current profile to a thumb drive. If push comes to shove I will have to uninstall/reinstall Firefox, but I'm trying to avoid the idea I would have to do that every single time there's an update.

(I noticed that I have Default=1 on Profile 1, not Profile 0, could that be an issue?)
No. It looks okay to me. Mine is different because I unlock and delete the default-release profile and use my own one instead. Not recommended though but I disable auto updates and install new versions via another method so I don't need that profile.

Just check your profiles folder and make sure that the profile shown is the one in the settings file.

Actually I reckon you could backup the profiles.ini file (make a copy) then edit the original.

    Remove the section highlighted:

After A Firefox update, Firefox willl only open in Windows Safe Mode-2020-04-09-01_48_11-profiles.ini.jpg

    Change StartWithlastProfile=0

Then you should get the profile chooser when you launch Firefox. Choose the one that starts with 5jb

If it works there is probably an issue with your other profile.

That didn't work. When the profile box came up it was blank. I created a new profile but that wouldn't start from Windows Normal mode either. So I just went back to my original profile.

I see that there is now yet another new FF update, 75.0. I was looking on youtube for possible solutions, there were none, but I did see a video where the gentleman used a different way to update. He would go to the top right menu in FF, select Help, About Firefox, then apply the update from the window that pops up. I have always updated from the drop down reminder window which requires that I exit FF and then re-open it. What happens with me is the install window opens with a message that Firefox will start shortly. But after the installation Firefox never opens. Sounds like a stretch but....

Haven't tried the troubleshooting method yet. To others who have offered ideas that I haven't responded to, I apologize, but I only have the patience to spend a little time each day on this issue that's been ongoing for months for me.

I would try the clean boot. If it works it tells you Firefox is not the issue and narrows the search.

RE: Firefox updates. See alternative method:

Firefox is already running - intermittent pop-up - why?

FYI: How to clean install Firefox.

You should really make a backup copy of your FF profile. Also export your bookmarks.

    1. Press [Windows key+R] on the keyboard. A Run dialog will open.
    2. Type in:
      %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\

    Or else navigate to:

    C:\Users\<Windows login/user name>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile folder>.

Backup these two: (Profiles folder and Profiles.ini file) to an external drive. Then disconnect the external drive.
    AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\
    AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles.ini

Get a copy of GeekUninstaller and run it. https://geekuninstaller.com

Find Firefox in the list of programs and double click it.
Choose yes when deleting profile data.
Allow it to scan for leftovers.
From the results list delete everything directly related to the Firefox Program installation or application data.

    Reboot when finished.

Run Cccleaner if you've got a copy. Check here for Firefox leftovers and delete if found:

    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
Press the [Windows key+R] to open a Run dialog, type in %APPDATA%\Mozilla\ and click OK to open the Mozilla folder, then delete the Firefox folder if found.

    Reboot.

Download a fresh copy of firefox and install it.

I did copy the current profile to a thumb drive. I did that for all the files that are in the root folder. I'll copy the ini file too. If need be. I'll learn how to copy it ALL to a new profile if it comes to that.

I had Ccleaner, and liked it, but deleted it because I had heard that it was sold to another company (Piriform?) and that they were using it for data mining or some such trickery. If it's okay now, I'd like it to reinstall it. Haven't found anything comparable to it since.

I have done the delete and reinstall thing several times and I'm really trying to avoid that every single damn time there's an update to FF. I went to the Mozilla forum and found a post from a guy who has/had the exact same issue as me. His post was just 3 days ago. I PM'd him and he said he got it to work by using Windows 8 compatibility. That didn't work for me. Mozilla hadn't replied to him as of today.

I do have some "pieces" of Firefox in my x86 folder left over from when FF was installed in that directory. There's also a Mozilla Maintenance folder there. I was hesitant to just delete all that stuff but I may just go ahead and do it anyway.

Let me just add that I am a 75 year old seasoned citizen. I do understand and can follow just about all of what you guys and gals are suggesting. Heck, I built this new system myself (my 3rd) just this past February so I'm not afraid of a challenge. But... with all this other crap we're all dealing with I do struggle with trying to stay motivated to solve this issue. Especially when I get into some new territory, for me, like clean boots and some other ideas you're suggesting.

Well to rule out problems with Firefox it's best to fully remove it including remnants. When you run the installer it looks for existing components and integrates some of them so if there's nothing for it to find then you have a clean install.

As for Ccleaner - it's not required to run it after the FF uninstall but it might help. If you are not comfortable with the program and it's settings then don't use it.

There are alternatives but all of them could be problematic if incorrecly configured.

Since it updates in Safe Mode why would you not try a clean boot and see if it will update?

Puzzles me, 10 minutes to set up, 10 minutes to undo.
