Cannot access yahoo mail via Outlook 2010

Windows 10 Pro 1909, Outlook 2010, Yahoo full featured mail, no account key or 2-step verification enabled

I have several yahoo mail (full featured) accounts and I have never been able to access them through Outlook 2010. No problems with web access thru any browser. Here are the settings:

    Incoming Mail (POP) Server
    Server - pop.mail.yahoo.com
    Port - 995
    Requires SSL - Yes

    Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server
    Server - smtp.mail.yahoo.com
    Port - 465 or 587
    Requires SSL - Yes
Requires TLS - Yes (if available)
    Requires authentication - Yes

    Login info
User Name: everything to the left of the @ sign in the email address
    e.g., name for name@yahoo.com
    Password - Account password.
    Requires authentication - Yes

Server always rejects the logon attempt:

Cannot access yahoo mail via Outlook 2010-yahoo-outlook-access-error.jpg

I have read where yahoo requires an app password or DMARC authentifcation but I don't know whether that is true or not. If so I don't think I would be able to access my yahoo account through Outlook 2010. Any way I would appreciate some help here. Note: I have configured many email accounts via Outlook (now 2010) thru pop servers and currently have gmail accounts receiving and sending mail thru outlook as well as emails that I host thru my own domain.

The reason I would like to get the yahoo accounts working thru Outlook is that I have a need to use alias addresses and yahoo supports 500 disposable (alias) email addresses per account.

Yahoo which is now Verison requires, pretty much, on all versions of Outlook XXXX that you use an app password.

Additionally in the last several months I have not been able to go to a Yahoo account in Outlook and just change the password to the app password. You must start fresh.

The comments above come from my personal experience since December 2019.

So you set up an app password in Yahoo, and then use it to set up an account, from the beginning, in Outlook.

It is likely that others will say you don't need. What I've found is that as long as your account is already setup in Outlook and you have not changed your password you are grand fathered in. As soon as you change your password the new requirement to use an app password comes into effect.

Other may have had different experiences.

Thanks Ken. I'm curious. Does the app password (for outlook) become the pw for web access also so there is just one pw for the account?

Nope, now you have two passwords for an account.

Ok. That worked. Only caveat is that I created the Outlook account from scratch so I did not have an opportunity to change the app password as it said I would and I don't see anyway to change it.

Sorry. You don't change app password.

Yahoo gives it to you and you use. The only app password Yahoo knows is the one it gave you. You change it in Outlook you don't get access as Yahoo doesn't recognize it.

Yes this is sort of strange. With other passwords if someone in supports gives you one you are forced to reset so they don't know it.

Here we have the password being kept in the profile. That said I'm 110% sure it is stored encrypted, salted and hashed, and no human other than you saw it. (Well maybe the NSA. LOL )

Hope you wrote it down, you can't even see it if you go back into Yahoo. At least that I know of. I usually copy into a Notepad and if it is one of my accounts my password manager.

Crazy, huh. When I generated the pw, it told me to go to Outlook and check mail for a link to reset the pw. Of course, since I didn't have an account yet, it's the classic catch-22.

Yahoo has not updated any of their support articles for how to do this and I missed the Manage App Passwords which is at the bottom of the Account Security page - my bad or I would have played around with it.

I am assuming that the setting up disposable addresses (which are tied to the main account) in Outlook should use the app pw. We'll see.

And yes, I do have a copy of the pw. Learned a long time ago about making copies.

Really appreciate your help here. I have tried off and on since 2018 to get this working.

In Canada one of our cable companies (ISP's) uses Yahoo for mail services. We've had long conversations with level 1 and level 2 support in setting up accounts. That said at least I could call and talk to a human and say WTf is going on with your systems.

Funny you should mention support articles, none of Rogers have been updated either. A lot of

Hopefully you will have things rolling very soon.

You have to log on to yahoo a go into setting > security > and near the bottom of the page you need to use the generate password for app. Then select Outlook desktop
