Why has Chromium appeared, plus the trashing of my Desktop

Around the same time as updates were installed some strange things happened, perhaps the least problematic is the appearance of Chromium on my Desktop. I can just delete the icon and / or uninstall the program but before I do I would be grateful for reassurance that this will not do any damage, in particular to new Edge and Chrome. Also, is there any advantage to my just keeping it?

The most damaging effect was the corruption of my Profile / Personal Folder causing the complete trashing of nearly all Desktop icons and Start tiles and deletion of some apps and programs and their data. A user on a MS Forum helped me to quickly reverse much (not all) of this, and mentioned that it had been happening a lot so I am passing on the warning.

Thank you! The link is spot on, Task Manager showed half a dozen instances of Chromium plus other suspicious things. I removed it using two 'power' uninstallers (IOB and Wise ---- I also have Revo). It has not returned, so far. Without the article I would not have realised that duplication of entries in Task Manager was a sign of infection, as it happens a lot anyway. At the moment there are 6 instances of Edge --- why is this?

Hi, Glad it all worked out for you :)
I think it's normal for EDGE and don't think its anything to worry about

Chrome does that, too. Nothing abnormal. The browser is splitting the load, core browser code and open tabs across several smaller processes to help with performance and to reduce the chance any one crashing tab (open site) would crash the whole browser. Common practice. Firefox does it, too.
