There is a bug and a reg fix is required. See link below. It fixed mine......win10 pro 64-bit with Outlook 2010 and IE 11.

I decided to switch back to using IE11 due to numerous problems with the new Edge browser. After switching I also began getting the popup box titled "How do you want to open this". I used the above link and ran the file they include on their site and allowed it to edit my Registry. It only took a minute and now I no longer get the annoying popup message.

    IT WORKS!

Awesome, that fixed it for me too, I used default="cmd /c start %1" so it just opens a new tab in existing window. It was so annoying.

    Teachemark is right...not you fracking4oil

Fracking4Oil...if you would read the numerous other comments on here there are MANY people complaining of this issue, so it is NOT just Teachermark's system. Just because YOU do not have the problem doesn't mean it does not exist. So how about YOU not minimize other people's problems and concerns just because it does not affect YOU?! In fact, if you have nothing useful to offer or aren't asking for help, how about you say nothing?

Please stop generalizing, it's not Windows but YOUR system. With Edge, IE or Chrome set as defualt I do not get this behavior.

I have the same issue, but I actually have NOT experienced it when opening hyperlinks. I have set Windows Media Player as my default for all video files (except DVD files), and I have set IrfanView as my default for all image formats. But apparently Windows doesn't believe that I meant it when I set those defaults. It doesn't happen all the time, but it has happened more than once.

Today alone, I got the "How do you want to open..." pop-up when opening and MP4 video, an MPG video, a PNG image, and a BMP image. It's irritating enough simply because I have manually gone in and set all of the defaults, plus every time this pop-up pops up, I check the "Always use this app" box. But it's so much more irritating because whenever the pop-up does decide to pop up, it takes 30 seconds or more for it to appear, and in the meantime, NOTHING happens. I don't even get the little spinning wheel mouse cursor.

If it's a bug, it's unquestionably intentional, because the new Win10 apps are always featured at the top of the list of options. And the "fix" proposed by luke7859 is irrelevant, not only because it would only work for that file type (although it could be adapted to any other file type), but also because I already have the default set, but somehow Windows feels the need to periodically ask me if I want to change my mind.

It would be great if there were a setting that is deeply buried somewhere that would simply turn off this behaviour.

This is a disgrace. And this warning will never disappear if you dont tick the box, and wont let you open the file in question.

Why the hell Windows ask me about HOW I WANT TO OPEN A JPG???

This is the most annoying Windows feature in 20 years.

    ....And no fix.

I have Win10Pro (upgraded in place from Win8.1Pro) and every time I click on a link in an email, I get the "How Do You Want To Open This" dialog box. I always click on Internet Explorer and I always check the box "Always use this app" but I still get this dialog popping up EVERY time I click on a link.

I'd love to stop this annoying behavior.
Here is the fix from Microsoft for this exact issue: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3094186

This is a default which may not be set via Settings when selecting a default browser and needs to be done explicitly from the Control Panel, Default Programs, Associate a file type...

Go right down towards the end of the list and check the HTTP and HTTPS associations and set as necessary.

This was so a long time ago, alas.

I've made two videos of this:

It is pretty annoying when you are peacefully your computer then you try to listen to a .flac song, a .mp4, a .mp3, see a .jpg or .png photo then you notice it is not opening; when you minimize everything you are doing, you see this disgraceful warning

Hello, most people don't experience this. So you need to discover the problem in your particular case.

I note your photo shows a thumbnail, not an icon. It would be a little more useful if we knew what was associated.

** Note that if you have a program registered to open, say, a jpg, and you then install another program registered to handle that file type, you will get that popup.

Whether we think that's good or bad design is another matter.

And what happens when you click the box 'Always use this app' once you've found one that opens the file? Does that set an association or not?
