If for some reason you want the Vertical tabs pane to only show the icons and you also want the pane not to expand automatically, Edge now offers that option. Here's how you can enable it: Once the pane expands automatically, move the pointer to the border, click and hold on it, then press the Caps Lock key:

You can also resize the pane to its minimum width, but that width is not the same as when the pane is collapsed.

This option is available in the Beta, Dev and Canary versions.

Edge now remembers if you pinned the Collections menu to the side of the screen, this means the next time you open it, it will still be pinned. This was something that some users had requested and Microsoft has now implemented it in Edge Canary:

    Pinned Collections (GIF).

I guess this is just the beginning and soon the other flyout menus (Favorites, History, Downloads) will receive this same option.

For now, once it's pinned, there is no way to go back, I don't know if later they will add an option so that the menu doesn't open pinned (if for some reason you just wanted to pin it temporarily).

You are right. There is no unpinning possible at all. I can't restore its behaviour to how it was before.

In the build released today in Canary, this "feature" is no longer available, maybe it was a bug and I mistakenly thought that Microsoft had added this option on purpose, or maybe they removed the "feature" until there is a way to unpin the pane
