Hang on - let me get this right.....
I install Edge (or any other MS product) on my PC, and MS can patch my installed version on my machine without my knowledge
Yes, they are called "controlled roll-outs", a long time ago I had a discussion about that in another post. And no, they don't require updates.

It's done all the time with insider builds so there is no reason it can't be done on release builds. You only rent the software, you don't own it.

Somewhere in EULA: "All rights reserved" and we signed for it.

But actually patching my PC after I've installed a program??? This is hacking not updating!

Stable is just about stability (not even sure if that's true) but that doesn't mean it's all finished. Witness all those beta/insider versions that show up practically every day.
Looks like they are doing similar thing as with windows, "secretly" changing and updating options and parts but keep them inactive until they deem it useful to enable. Like it was with 20H2, all parts were there and enabled by Enablement package" or whachamacallit. Using that we got it from 2004 before 20H2 was officially released thru WU. I expect same thing to happen for 21H1.

Several times in this thread I have shown features that other users of the same version of Edge do not have and there is no flag to enable them, Microsoft simply enables them via server, all you have to do is close the browser, when you open it again, Voila, a new feature "magically" appears.

Yes, Mike, I get that, BUT you had to allow the enablement package which is a sort of update. This is looking like it just changes when you next open the program!

I remember that at the beginning I did not have the new downloads menu, but I saw someone mention it in another forum, so I closed Edge Canary immediately, and when I opened it again, there was the downloads button in the toolbar.
