    Unable to access new Gmail account using Windows Live Mail/Windows 10

    Hi,
    I have just set up an additional gmail account within Windows Live Mail 2012 and Windows 10 pro. I have checked all the settings and they are correct and identical to my original gmail account, which I've been using for a long time without any problems.My original gmail account is working fine but when I try to access my new gmail account, I am totally unable to do so.The error message I receive is as follows : "The server has rejected your login. Please verify that your username and password are correct."I accessed my new account on Google's website and noted a comment in my new account page which stated :"Someone just used your password to try to sign in to your account from a non-Google app. Google blocked them, but you should check what happened. Review your account activity to make sure no one else has access."I confirmed that it was me who attempted to log in but further attempts to log in still failed....

    Looking further on my new account page I found the following :"Less secure app blocked...Google blocked the app you were trying to use because it doesn't meet our security standards.Some apps and devices use less secure sign-in technology, which makes your account more vulnerable. You can turn off access for these apps, which we recommend, or turn on access if you want to use them despite the risks. Google will automatically turn this setting OFF if it's not being used."

    The strange thing is that my original gmail account is fully accessible using the same computer and Windows Live Mail and the same email settings !! I know that my login details (name and password) and email account settings are correct - I double checked them - so why I am being denied access to my new account, is beyond me...
    Just out of interest, I set up my new gmail account on my Samsung Mobile phone and my Tablet and both these devices can access and send and receive emails using my new gmail account.

    So, it would seem that the problem lies with Windows 10 / Windows Live Mail ?
    I would really appreciate any suggestions as to why this strange situation is occurring and a possible solution.

    OS is Windows 10 version 1909

    Thank You.

    Windows Live Mail 2012 is no longer supported.
    This has been the case for over 3 years.

    You can use the Mail App in Windows 10.

    Hi Helmut,
    Thank you for your reply. I am aware of the Windows Mail app. but much prefer the Windows Live Mail app since it is more versatile in my opinion. However, your comment about WLM being 'out of date' does not explain why my original gmail account still works well and always has done, but my new account will not.

    Just because a program is no longer supported by Microsoft, does not make it unusable....

    Your original account still works because you had it working while the app was still considered usable. No new accounts will work.

    It’s a new-ish security feature which is not only on Gmail but Yahoomail, iCloud & any other email providers using Yahoo or Google.
    The account either requires ‘allow use of less secure apps’ to be on or you use 2-factor authentication & create an app specific password & use this in WLMail instead of the account password.

    Thank you Bastet - I investigated the option of using the ‘allow use of less secure apps’ and it works well.
    I realise that there could be security problems using this method, however, I have been using a program called Mailwasher for a long time and never experienced any spam, virus or other problems with any of my email accounts.

    Thank you to all who have contributed their time to answer my question - truly appreciated....

    Great to hear.
    I believe two-factor/step authentication is more to prevent unauthorised access to your account/s. I use this on all my account which have it available & anyone trying to log in, even if they had my details still couldn’t gain access unless they also had my phone for the codes.

    Good day.

    I am Michael, a Microsoft Community member and a fellow Windows 10 user like you. I hope I can help you on your concern.

    It's possible the Windows Live Mail got corrupted after the update, please perform the following below in the registry:
    1. click Windows Key + R (to open run)
    2. in the run type and enter: REGEDIT
    3. Go to Computer > HKEY_CURRENT_USER > SOFTWARE > Microsoft > Windows Live Mail
    4. Create these 3 DWORD entries (if they didnt exist) or change to 1 if they exist

    RecreateFolderIndex = 1
    RecreateStreamIndex = 1
    RecreateUIDLIndex = 1

    5. Restart Windows Live Mail.

    Sincerely
    Mike
