eM Client working, Windows Mail not

I am setting up a new W10 computer. I have already installed eM Client (my preferred email client) and that is downloading emails without problem. However, I want to use another email client for an email address I like to keep separate. I used the quick set up in Windows Mail and the account is there but it will not download emails. I just get the equivalent of the hourglass and nothing downloads. In addition, I cannot access any settings. I have been through all the privacy settings but cannot find anything to account for the problem. I did "reset" and also turned off the firewall - neither helped. In desperation I installed Thunderbird and this set up very easily but then when I tried to download emails it flashed up a message saying that something was preventing it from downloading. I uninstalled Thunderbird as I didn't want to complicate things. Can anyone please suggest what the problem might be? Thanks.

    Hi folks

check that the email systems are the same i.e use the same protocol -- I think eM uses POP3 which is rather old these days, modern systems use IMAP so check your email clients are all consistent especially if its from the same account / email address.

    Nope, it uses imap.

    Hi there
I stand corrected -- but still check that the protocols are the same.

I haven't had problems using Thunderbird and Outlook 2019 on the same machine so I can't help as to why 2 email clients can't work on your Windows system other than suggestion given.

Thanks for the posts. I use pop3 because .... I am rather old fashioned too!

Thing is, eM Client is running fine and because I used quick set up in Windows Mail that would have set up an imap account. That's not the issue - it is the fact that I cannot get Windows Mail to download (nor Thunderbird).

Had exactly the same set up in W7 without a problem. I think (although I may be wrong) that in trying to keep W10 private I have blocked something.

Ok ... so I have turned on every privacy setting that I had turned off. I have reset Windows Mail. I have deleted the account and set up a pop 3 account (same as eM Client). It says that the account set up successfully. When I try to download emails it just hangs. And to boot ... I still cannot access the settings even though the account is set up.

Driving me a tad crazy so any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Could syncing be the issue? I signed in with a local account - didn't want to be forced to have an MS account. When I go to the syncing page in settings they are all off and greyed out. Could it be the source of the problem?

Did you try using the Add an account/advanced setup option in the Win 10 Mail App?

Hi garyb0125 - yes I did, well I have tried it both ways, am currently set up using advanced.

Having taken off all the closed privacy settings and re-installed TB and established an account manually as a pop3 it works! Bravo.

Windows Mail resolutely does not want to work and my amateur sleuthing skills tell me it is the fact that the syncing is greyed out meaning Windows Mail won't sync.

I suspect that there were two issues here - (1) how I had cranked every setting down to maintain privacy and (2) the lack of an MS account causing the sync settings to be unavailable.

At the end of the day I want an operating system and nothing more. This probably precludes using things like Windows Mail.

Thanks to everyone even though in the end I think I got there under my own steam!
