Disable Edge from opening at Start

I followed the latest directions I found in the Forum that were over a year old, until I couldn't. My system is Windows 10 Home version 1903. I've opted out of S Mode. My browser is Chrome, and I find it extremely annoying and time consuming to have to close Edge every time I start my new laptop. Can someone help? Thanks

hi bigfoote, and welcome to Tenforums.

    Which page is it opening?
Is there anything in startup path? You can check in Task manager, or better with autoruns.

    Welcome to Ten Forums bigfoote.

If you mean you want to stop Edge pre-launching in the background, then see this tutorial.

By default, Microsoft Edge pre-launches as a background process during Windows startup, when the system is idle, and each time Microsoft Edge is closed waiting to be launched by the user....

...This tutorial will show you how to enable or disable Microsoft Edge pre-launching during Windows sign in, when the system is idle, and each time Microsoft Edge is closed for all users in Windows 10.

Andre thank you for your answer. It didn't work when I tried it, but then I realized I had not signed in as Administrator. Unaware of how to do that, I did a search and was unable to sign in as Administrator. Once I'm successful in signing in I believe this will be a great fix. Thanks

I think you meant to say Bree there

Administrator is the name of a built-in account in Windows and is disabled by default. But you do not need to sign in as Administrator, you need to sign in as an administrator - there's a difference.

The first account windows sets up when it is run for the first time is made a member of the administrators group so that it can manage the PC. You can create more accounts if you like, but by default they will be Standard users. You just need to sign in as any account that is an administrator.

You can check if the account that you are signed in with is an administrator with Option Five in this Tutorial.

Determine Account Type in Windows 10

Option Four in the same tutorial will show you a list of the accounts that are administrators.

I did mean to thank Bree

Bree, thank you for your reply's, and I apologize for my confusion earlier about your first response. This is a new laptop and I am the administrator. As my system is a Windows 10 Home I followed Option 2, This hasn't worked. I performed it three times and Edge still pops up when I open my laptop. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Edge is actually opening as a window on the screen? That tutorial is for stopping it pre-load which it does by default, but pre-loading is designed to make opening Edge faster when you want it, not to actually open it.

Have a look in the Task Manager's Start-up tab. If there's nothing obvious there that would open Edge, then download Autoruns from Microsoft.

This utility, which has the most comprehensive knowledge of auto-starting locations of any startup monitor, shows you what programs are configured to run during system bootup or login...

What page does Edge open with? That may give a clue.

    Possibly post #8 here:
Anniversary Update - default browser opens on login
    - but it's a bit of an unusual possibility.

When I open my lapyop Edge pops up with Bing. Task manager shows Microsoft Edge running. The Auto run download shows a lot of stuff, on of which is HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Explorer\Shellcom Overlay Ident

    Try this....

Settings > Accounts > Sign-In Options - Under Privacy, make sure “use my sign in info to automatically....” is toggled off. Reboot.
