    Outlook 2019 and gmail

    Hey guys,

I cant get outlook 2019 to connect to gmail. My install of windows is fresh (1909) and so is microsoft office 2019. Hotmail is connected. I have imap set up in my google account and the app password generated. Any ideas? also the mail in windows wouldn't connect to it either.

Outlook 2019 uses your normal password not a generated one.

It's because Gmail doesn't recognize Outlook as an official application. See the following:

So everything in gmail is set up right, I verified it with thunderbird (works fine). I put in the app specific password for thunderbird
and it opens google account for verification, outlook doesn't do that. It just fails with imap encryption problem.

Try setting up the account through the mail applet in the classic control panel.

I started a thread on the same issue a couple of months ago. This describes how you may solve it:

Generate a device password for your Google account.
When you set up your account in Outlook use Normal Password as the authorization method.
It might help to change the Gmail servers to imap.googlemail.com and smtp.googlemail.com. The port numbers of 993 & 465 are valid
When you set-up your account enter your account password first. If the sign-in doesn't work after changing the server names and authorization method.enter the device password and try again.

This has worked for me using both Outlook and Thunderbird after trying everything else that was suggested.

Thunderbird works, just not outlook. I have tried this but no avail. This also started with the 1909 November update. I then reinstalled windows fresh with 1909 November Update, same thing.

I wish I could provide a bullet-proof solution but it seems that what works for some doesn't work for others. As an example I recently installed a new Linux Mint VM and when I set-up Gmail on Thunderbird it puked. I putzed with it for a couple of hours before I tried the Normal Password setting and all of a sudden everything worked. What I do know is that there are at least three recent threads on this issue so when you read comments like "Hey it worked for me no problem" it's not due to any inability to read English and follow instructions.

Thanks for everyone's help. The solution for me was in this thread below here on the forums.

Outlook cannot connect to GMail server does not support the connection encryption type
