Have you folks tried creating a new user profile and seeing if the problem moves to new profile?

Have you used Crystal Disk Info to see disk health... one would think you would also see in firefox but worth checking?

    CrystalDiskInfo – Crystal Dew World

Once installed click on "Function" tab > Advance Feature > Raw Values > 10[Dec]

This presents error values in decimal amounts.

What is the overall health status of disk(s)? Are any of the categories showing a warning? Are you getting seek, write or read errors? Have you gotten any "Reallocated Sectors"?

If you do a clean boot, not a clean install, does it still occur?

Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 10 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts

When you uninstalled Chrome did you delete all Chrome data down AppData path, in particular default profile directory.

Thank you for all that advice, Ken :)

I have just installed and run CrystalDisk and (to my relief) is says Health Status "Good" - temp is 38%, I'd have to google to remind myself if that's OK but I think it is - especially bearing in mind the amount of video editing and stream-downloading I do 24/7.

I have not yet attempted any of the other elements of your advice but thought I'd let you know that it's not fallen on deaf ears. If only I can break off from the "work" I'm doing every waking hour, I plan to reinstall Win10 yet again

Next time you install Windows, and your programs, take a system image. A one hour restore saves a huge amount of time.

It takes me about 2 days to reinstall Win10 and programs... maybe longer, allowing for the forgotten "apps" and having to shut down running progs to install them :'(

Just to let you know that since yesterday's Win10 update...guess what? Yes, problems have gone away. Fingers crossed but the imaging advice will not be forgotten
