How can solve this irritating error message?
there is no email program associated to perform the requested action. Please install an email program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel.

Choose Default Apps in Windows 10
E.g. Option 5
When does it occur? Are you trying to open an eml file for example?
Do you have a preferred email client?
Depends where you get that message.
Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Choose default applications by protocol.
scroll down list to MAILTO
On mine that is allocated to the Mail App in Windows 10, the Default app is also the Mail App.
I have several accounts on the Mail App (Email client) I can use, but of course at least one Mail account has to be setup.
The other choice for that on mine is Google Chrome, I have never tried that.
Anytime I boot up I get the message. Thunderbird as Default.

OK. I set the Default as: Mail, and rebooted, and it pop up again. Maybe after several reboots it will stick.
I use Thunderbird, no problem like that, so perhaps there's some sort of startup attempting to do something that is not defined.
You could examine your startups, first in task manager, then in more detail in Autoruns (free from MS).
To see if that would help, you can try a clean boot and see if the message still occurs.

Now try a process of elimination. Your objective is to determine which, if any startup is causing this.
Note: you have not been able to provide a clue as to its source as yet...
Suggest you make an appropriate backup first, just in case. (Disk imaging is constantly recommended).
First do a clean boot. (Google if unsure).
Does it still occur?
If it does, download and run Autoruns (free from MS).
(Note, you can use this to create a backup before starting).
Use cautiously, disabling only startup items, and not any from MS.
Can you reach a point when this does not occur? If so, identify which is responsible.
If still no success, create a new user for test purposes. Do you still see the same problem when you log in as that user?
