Pop ups occuring in Microsoft Edge

thinking it might be an extension. I go to extension but the only thing I can do in extensions is acquire some extensions as there are no extensions attached to my Edge browser. the popups are either sells or notifications and it is clearly an unwanted pup. at the bottom of the popups is : en.softonic.via microsoft edg how do I get rid of en.softonic.via microsoft edg?

Run in safe mode (Edge) without extensions. Clear history and cookies, check for infection.

en.softonic via microsoft edge is here to stay

Thank you bro67, I took your suggestion and ran with it. while in safe mode I went to packages and deleted microsoft edge only to turn around and go through power shell and reinstall it. as I open the edge browser I was disappointed. Them sorry bastions were proud of themselves, bragging in all; telling me how they kept all my favorites, tabs etc. thats not all they kept! they did remove all extensions so wherever this "en.softonic via microsoft edge" is it's not in extensions. Thanks to these guys I still have it. I already prior to joining your forum installed Opera and moved all of my favorites to it so that I could do this very thing if I had to. Now apart from a rabbit being pulled out of a hat I'm going to delete it again this time without reinstalling it.

You should be careful downloading from softonic. Use majorgeeks.com. You can download the Chromium Edge from Microsoft at Microsoft.com.

Thank you, I may have downloaded something from them but I don't believe so. I can remember when the trouble started and at that time I immediately reflect back thinking to myself, what did I do? at that time I was using those prefixes on YouTube URLs to make mp4 videos. I used three or four of those prefixes during that time. and I'm pretty certain that's where my litter of puppy popups came from.
