Well, the last is from a wide range of experience- you can find that comment repeated on the forum. But as with rocket launches- there's always a risk.

As for vanishing restore points- please try researching that- as I said, lots of reports in this forum and generally. S Restore is not regarded in this forum as to be relied upon- restoring too often fails (without adverse consequences).

I did an in-place Windows repair -- took about 45 minutes -- and guess what? Edge still silently closes after about seven seconds. How is that even possible? <sigh...>

Since it occurs with any user, and after an in-place upgrade repair, suggests some 3rd party effect common to all users.

What happens if you do a clean boot? What security software are you using?

Since you've repaired and reset Edge and tried it with different users, that would seem to argue against it being data related to Edge, or its settings.

If you boot to Safe Mode, does Edge stay open?

Makes perfect sense. In Safe Mode Edge stayed open, so that confirmed third-party interference.

I don't have many things auto-load, so it was fairly simply to suspend the few that do. Got down to just firewall (Comodo) and anti-virus (Avast), and to stop them from loading, had to uninstall them totally. Bingo! Edge worked fine without both of them. Reinstalled Comodo and Edge still worked fine. Then reinstalled Avast and Edge still works fine. Who knows? <shrug>

    Thanks for all your help!

Great- which proves, I suppose, rather than necessarily suspecting MS & Windows, it's sometimes worth checking for such effects.

Quite often trying a new user achieves that, but not where either the same drivers and services are still loaded, or programs start up which are set to do so for all users and one or more of these is significant.
