Chrome Profile Crashed + Windows Shortcuts & Restore Points Missing

Windows 10 v1903. Last two updates on 30/05/19: Flash Player Security and Cumulative update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8

I (normally) have a very stable system but this morning problems came thick and fast:

    1. Chrome closed unexpectedly with what I took to be symptoms of a corrupt profile - all my bookmarks vanished and extensions were disabled.
    2. Possibly at the same time but overlooked because of the Chrome issue, many of my Windows Taskbar shortcuts became inactive and when selected, gave a "can't open this item, it might have been deleted or moved"
    3. Several shortcut Tiles and application listings themselves also disappeared from the Start Menu including File Explorer. I could start them with a keyboard shortcut but could not find any clue in the shortcut properties to show why they weren't working. The icons on the Taskbar active applications are also blank in some cases.
    4. My network settings started asking for passwords for access to the NAS

I had created a couple of restore points soon after the last MS updates and decided to revert to the latest one, however, when I got there backup and restore was switched off and reported no restore points were available. I haven't been able to find them manually despite hidden files being visible.

I made a System Image about 4 weeks ago but it doesn't appear to be recognised - and the only external Recovery drive I have is the same although it's 15 months old so I'm not sure if it would be any use anyway.

I"m just about try the fixing on startup options but don't hold out much hope. Will report progress but in the meantime any suggestions would be very gratefully received.

I see this has been moved while I was trying the Start Up restore options which didn't work any differently that going via Settings. Does this mean that the moderator feels Chrome is at the heart of the problems? Seemed to me that it was an OS glitch that also affected the browser, but let's wait and see.

    Hi Newto10.

Did you force update to 1903 or did Windows Update deliver?

Sounds like you can still get into Windows. If so I would do a repair install with fresh media created by MCT tool.

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

For future backups may I recommend a tool like Macrium Reflect, not Windows back and not Restore points.

Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect

If you think Chrome is giving you issues reset it and use their clean up tool. Done within Chrome settings.

I might also check the disk for errors using chkdsk /r

First get a system image, create and test the boot media associated with the tool you choose.

Thanks, Ken. I forced the update to 1903 as one of the applications I was loading was supposed to need it to work properly. Yes, I can still get into Windows and it's functional except (as far as I can see) the strangeness with the icons and shortcuts.

I'll take a look at Macrium as I see it's mentioned a lot on this forum. Have checked the drives (SSD for the OS and a hybrid for the applications and users etc) and both came up clean.

Chrome is working but I can't get sync to bring back my bookmarks although the contacts are visible in gmail. Will try Clean-up and sync again.

Wow I can't imagine any app requiring 1903 since MS made no commitment as to when it would be available or when everyone would have.

Myself I would fall back on to 1809 and let the dust settle.

If Chrome is syncing log out, claose Chrome and restart. Then log back in. Also make sure all machines are set to sync the same things. Bookmarks and contacts are two different things.

Gmail contacts are kept within gmail and you see them from what ever machine you log into.

Bookmarks / history and passwords are Chrome elements.

Tried to go back to the previous Win version but it says it's not available. I sorted some of the problems out but still can't get my bookmarks back in Chrome. The desktop version of Outlook told me my profile needed updating for about a week and failed to do so on request. I ran the web version for a day or two (all my data was OK) and then out of nowhere the Ofiice version started to work again. I'll battle on!
    Thanks for the help everyone.
