Popups in Edge (Win 10 Pro)

I am just wondering how to deal with those annoying popups that occur when you are reading an online article. The ones that tell you your Windows is damaged and obsolete and play an irritating tone. I know you can close your browser and that those popups are not on your system.
But...where do they come from and can you block them in some way? I am using Win10 Pro 1903 patched up to date, windows defender with default security settings etc, etc, no Edge addons, but still these popups occur.
I'm not talking obscure dark web sites, normal sites such as PC Gamer, Toms Hardware and similar. It can make reading online articles a particularly painful process.
Can any one shed some light?

As far as I know those kind of things are purely related to the site and the ads they host. I've seen perhaps just 3 or 4 over a year. Nothing you can do other than to close the browser and be sure not click any links on the page.

Some can look quite convincing and the audible alarms grab your attention but they are purely malicious sites.

Always try and report the site concerned:

Ok, I installed the Edge addon Adblocker Ultimate from the Windows Store, its free and so far it has a 100% success rate at stopping those pesky pop ups with as far as I can see no conflict issues. I can browse in peace, I can log in to all my sites no problem, can buy from sites (game accounts, Amazon etc) without issues from Adblocker. So I'm quite happy now. Thanks for the pointers.
