Latest Win10 update has blocked Firefox as default browser, locked Edg

The morning of May 25th 2019 Pacific Time Microsoft locked in MS Edge as a default browser in Windows 10 on my computer.

My system shows 2019-05 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 version 1809 for x64-based Systems (KB4494441) successfully installed on 5/23/2019 (yet yesterday, 5/24 Firefox was still my default browser)

Please read the following methods to see how they did it. Bottom line: Firefox, Chrome or any other browser are not recognized by Windows 10.

    Settings>default apps>web browser
Microsoft Edge or "Look for app in Microsoft Store" (of course neither Firefox nor Chrome nor IE11 are listed there)

Settings>default apps>"choose default apps by protocol"
HTTP and HTTPS are locked in by MS Edge, no way to change

    Settings>default apps>"set defaults by app"
Firefox nor Google Chrome nor IE11 are listed

Does anyone have a fix. What can we do?

Can you force it from within Firefox. Click 3 bar menu upper R corner/Options. See if you can check "Always check if Firefox is your default browser" box and set Firefox as default. Good Luck.

I would uninstall Firefox and reboot then reinstall it, I'm personally going to wait about a month before installing 1903 and when I do I will more that likely do a clean install from scratch.

I'm not sure what this will tell you since this problem has nothing to do with IP or Internet. The problem is a Win10 update that locked in MS Edge.

mrgeek - "Always check to see if Firefox is default browser" has been checked since I began using Netscape in 1996. This doesn't "force" anything.

Sounds like the install picked up a fault in firefox (out of date? or something else.)
try uninstalling and re-installing firefox and resetting default apps. You have backed up your
    bookmarks and passwords, right?

    Not only Firefox

Hello thomaseg1 - I should have emphasized that it is not only Firefox but any other browser. No other browser is listed such as Chrome or Palemoon or IE11. So if a Microsoft update somehow put a glitch into Firefox requiring re-installation then it put the same glitch in Chrome and IE11, Microsoft's own browser.

Hello Edwin. I tried that but I don't get how that would change the system. I already have htm files default open to IE11. They still do. Also, html files open with Universal Viewer. How would your instructions change Windows 10?

If you force a protocol, there's a good chance that app will show up as a default choice...

You can always change the protocol back.

Edwin - I get it. I tried it but it didn't work. The protocol for opening a web browser is HTTP or HTTPS. Once again, only MS Edge is offered as an app to open those protocols on my computer. If only I could get back the choices as in your screenshot above.

I can tell you when this happened almost to the hour, about 10:00 Saturday morning. Firefox suddenly said "Firefox is not your default browser". I was doing nothing unusual at the time. Just reading email in Thunderbird and clicking on links.

I'm also concerned than no one else is posting about this problem currently. There are many forum posts about this same problem back in 2016 and 2017 but it's just me in 2019.

Possibly there are no other posts about the problem because nobody else has experienced it. I use Firefox and had no problems with it after that update, it's still my default browser.

My update history shows Cumulative Update for Windows 10 version 1809 for x64-based Systems (KB4494441) successfully installed on 5/14/2019. I don't know if it means anything but the same update KB4494441 was downloaded and installed again the next day 5/15/2019. You might check and see if you have two entries of this update as I do, FWIW my two laptops and my wife's laptops did the same thing.
