I re-installed WLM, (I have a fondness for classic Windows programs!)

    Still works great!

You have to use the Windows Live Essentials offline installer, set up accounts manually and, I think you need NET Framework 3.5

Best mail client there has ever been was Eudora, IMO. Since Qualcomm dropped it, I've been using Thunderbird and like it very much.

I second the vote for T'bird. It is stable, the contributors keep making the right moves, it is big, can handle a load of data and a lot of accounts. I hope it does not go away anytime soon. I've talked others into using it when they were convinced that they would force-feed themselves outlook , and they like...

Update: Reinstalled Win 10 from an Acronis backup image created last December, and Win Live Mail is running fine.

The only glitch was my 2nd email account would receive, but not send emails. Turned out the SMTP needed a legacy value of 465. And then it ran perfectly.

After trying eM Client and Thunderbox, in my book, nothing holds a candle to Win Live Mail … with multiple options; ribbon menus in both the main window & emails; mega fonts, size & color; drag/drop emails to the desktop; forward emails from a desktop folder without the app open; copy and paste pics to main body of the message … and the list goes on and on!

What I can't understand is why Microsoft have a weak, pathetic email app in their latest flagship!
A classic example of change doesn't mean better! Or, if it ain;'t broke, don't fix it!

WLM was never particularly good, 2 of my 6 Email Accounts would not work with it using IMAP.
Good layout as it was a proper Application, but not flawless.

Thunderbird unreliable, EMclient only 2 accounts for free, so of little use at all. I tried others as well but each was not good in some respect.

At least the Mail App in Windows 10 does work on those 6 Accounts and has done for 5 years. It has improved over those years. The Appsy (UWP) type of layout is limiting.
Some of what you are complaining about can now be done in the Mail App.

Still looking for a good one, as yet, none for free anyway.

Each to their own, but I never put files of any kind on the Desktop, an unsafe location, only Shortcuts to them. You can save Emails to the Desktop with the Windows 10 Mail App if you wish even if you can't drag and drop.

    Fair comment.

I drag/drop received or sent emails to desktop and save in an encrypted folder.

Thunderbird is very good, not sure why some are saying it is unreliable. Works very well. I have 5 email accounts attached to it, including Outlook, Hotmail, and 3 gmail accounts.
