    Why Do Some Emails From ZDNet Newsletter Go To Spam and Not Inbox?


    I was looking through the spam folder in Gmail and was wondering why some emails from ZDNet Newsletter which I am subscribed to go to the Inbox and remain there while others are relegated to the spam folder. I also noticed some emails from CNET Insider <[email protected]> which I am also subscribed to are in the spam folder. TIA.

    The automatic spam sorting in Gmail and other major mail providers are dependent on lots of different algorithms, this includes reports from users, Heuristics, and word association, if the mail header or the content meets a set number of fails against the checks it goes to Spam rather than the inbox.

    You should be able to go into the Spam folder and mark the emails as "Not Spam" which should allow the mails through as long as you are happy to receive them, but you may need to flag the mails several times to get them all accepted

    Thanks for responding. I figured it had something to do with wording in either the subject header or the body of the email that triggered why some emails would be relegated to SPAM however it did occur to me that it could be some kind of phishing expedition mimicking the ZDNet Newsletter that might try to exploit some kind of script once put back in the In Box and subsequently opened and read. I am familiar with going into SPAM and marking emails NOT SPAM nevertheless I wanted to get another person's opinion. Thanks.

    Hi there
    sometimes that doesn't work either -- it depends on the email server(s) - if they deem some stuff is spam there's not a lot you can do about it - even if you set rules in your email client to say these are not spam emails.

    OK.

    The problem with ZDnet is that they are owned by CBS Interactive, who also has TechRepublic.com, Download.com and many other properties in their portfolio.
    ZDnet publishes a slew of specific emails (and advertising) so it'd no surprise that it would flagged as Spam to some extent.

    Just "tell" Gmail that it is not Spam and it's junk mail filter will learn that these emails are OK.
