WIN10 HOME - EDGE not allowing Google as preffered search provider

    Hello, new guy here.
I just purchased (April 2019) a new PC running WIN10 Home - Version 10.0.17763 Build 17763. As with most it came with Bing as the default search engine and my preference is Google. I went through the process of making Google my preferred and it is not accepting the change. I read a post saying that the latest version (April 2019) of WIN10 is actually blocking the use of Google and pushing hard for Bing. FYI, my last PC which died from "operating system not recognized" was running WIN10 Pro and I used Google all the time with no issues. Is anyone able to confirm this issue, do I need to upgrade to 10 Pro? Thanks

    Welcome to TenForums @crossbow.

It all depends on what you use to search. There are two places you can type your search terms, the address bar and the search box at the top of a New Tab page. The setting for the default search engine only applies to searches from the address bar, so use that for your searches in future.

These screenshots are of Edge in 17763 Pro with the default search engine set for Google. The search box on New Tab will still use Bing, but searches from the address bar produce Google results.

I have 10 Home and same issue (not that I mind since I get MS Reward points for using Bing). I go to Settings/Advanced/Address bar search/Change search provider and get this,no option to change -

When I use Edge Dev (which I love and use instead of Edge) and go to Settings/Privacy and services/Address bar, I get all sorts of choices incl Google and many sites I frequent (list truncated) -

OP could test EdgeDev which will replace Edge in 1903 anyway and runs Chrome Web Store extensions by downloading here- https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/

Not yet, it hasn't. At least, not in the 1903 build 18362.53 that's in the Release Preview ring and expected to be released at the end of May. Maybe it's pencilled in for the release after 1903?

So your 1903 RP has both Edge browsers ? I like using the Edge Dev, although there are a few quirks, and using more Chrome extensions than available in MS Store. It updated itself right after I posted last night too. Cheers

No, you misunderstand me. 1903 does not have a 'chromium' version of Edge at all, just the original one (updated a bit, but still the original).

Looks like Edge Dev and Canary will still be in development for some time after the launch of 1903. It hasn't even been released as Beta yet...

The Beta channel will be the most stable Microsoft Edge preview experience. It will be here soon, after we've had a chance to learn and improve in our other channels.

You have to visit e.g. Google.com first, then that site becomes "(discovered)" and can be selected and set as default search provider:

That works ! It must work this way in Edge Dev too because I have a dozen choices, many from sites not suitable for general searching, like walmart

Agreed. There you can use ... More actions, Remove to delete any which you're never going to want as default.
