    Browser controls unstable

(Moved from the thread 'Minimizing the browser window')

A few days ago my wife drew my attention to her Win 8.1 IE browser where the Minimize, Maximize and Close icons had suddenly disappeared from the top of the browser. I checked the problem on my Win 10 Edge browser and managed to create the same problem! I also found the problem on both of our email clients windows - OEClasssic.

Neither of us have ever seen that behaviour before on any OS, so assume that it is due to recent general update changes?

By various tricks involving ensuring that all possibility of either OS assuming that we have touch screens, the incidence has reduced, but it still happens over this week, apparently unpredictably.

The only way I can keep it more or less under control is to manually resize windows so that they just do not reach the top edge of her monitor's screen. (My Edge browser seems to be normal again today.)

    - - - Updated - - -

    Added about 5 hours later.

Win 10 Edge has just lost the icons again! If I move the cursor arrow over where they should be, they individually appear when the cursor reaches the correct area!

To avoid any misunderstandings, please could you post a screenshot of the screen as it appears during the fault condition. [This will bowl out the possibility that you are accidentally pressing the F11 key & therefore going into full screen mode in the browser.]

Inexplicable problems causing screen elements to not work as expected can be caused by corrupted display drivers or out-of-date Bioses.
    - Check for any updated Bios on your computer maker's website and install it.
    - Download a new copy of the latest display driver from there. Installing a driver again achieves much more than simply checking for updates because update checks may not recognise that a driver is misbehaving.

For the first part of my answer, I attach two screenshots where the top right icons appear on the Edge browser and where they don't after I had clicked on the bar to the left of the Minimise icon. No, I didn't use F11.

More tomorrow when I work out how to attach the images!

    Now images attached

I wondered why I couldn't find the attach icon I had used before! My profile settings had changed!

Here are the two I promised. In the situation where the three icons are not visible, if I start to the left of where they should be and hold click while moving the cursor to the right, each one appears and disappears as the cursor moves across its designed position on the bar.

On the Win 8.1 PC this behaviour is not the same. Also, on that monitor the whole browser window can be moved off of any side of the monitor which I cannot do on the Win 10 PC'

PS Sorry about the delay. A weekend emergency. My old cat (see my profile image) had to be admitted to hospital today as he couldn't urinate. Poor cat was most uncomfortable with a swollen bladder. Hopefully back home in a day or two.

Going on from Denis' reply, I have now carried out some of the suggestions.

    1. Check graphics card driver - I did that and found it there was an update available. My next test showed a difference.
A week later I checked again (using the Lenovo Vantage "check for updates" system and found it had been updated again! I did that yesterday and report the result below.
    2. Check BIOS - I did that and found that the February 2016 version (Lenovo H30-05) was updated in August 2016. I am now in discussion with Lenovo to find out why their installation instructions are wildly at variance with what actually happens when trying to run the install! I certainly won't attempt that until they get back to me. Promised ASAP.

    Results so far.

For Opera and IE11 browsers and OEClassic email client the 3 icons (Minimise, Restore and Close) remain in place at all times no matter how I position or size the windows. So now no problem with them.

For Edge the 3 icons come and go, but can always be found.
When the window is Restored to smaller than full screen dimensions, the icons are always there.
When the window is Maximised to full screen dimensions, the icons are there, UNTIL, I click to the left of them on the blank part of their bar. Then they vanish! But they are just hidden. If I move the cursor over the blank part from left to right, then at the point.where the Minimise icon should be, that one appears! Similarly, if I keep moving to the right, each appears and disappears in turn!
ALSO, if I click on the blank part of the bar, the three reappear together, and then disappear again after a second or so.
FINALLY, if I click and hold for a second or so, all three reappear and STAY PUT!

That behaviour only happens on MS Edge.

I have only tried all this on Win 10 so far. I will have a go at Win 8.1 but there is no Edge browser on that.

At least I can now know that I can get the icons back if they disappear

I have also noticed that the various windows have a trick I have never noticed on Win 7. When full screen, they stay put. But only when Restored to a smaller size, if I click and hold on the top of a window, they can be floated beyond the screen's outer margins. Is that difference part of normal Win 10 behaviour?

    Tony,

I thought I could move windows beyond screen edges on Windows 7 as well. Well, sides & bottom of screen anyway. The top is a different matter.

While you are waiting on Lenovo to reply, if there is a Lenovo user forum you might see if that contains any reports on the subject of Bios updates.

Yes, the Lenovo Forum has exactly the same question! From 2016 and the writers never got an answer!

Now I have stirred it up direct with the Danish Support section, and a promise that "I have sent the info on to our backoffice, as soon as i recieve an answer from them ill sent it your way, hopefully they can either provide the correct download link or update it on the page itself"

Cross fingers! (Kryds fingre på dansk!)
