MS Edge: Search Engine defaults to Bing

    Hi,
This morning, MS Edge defaults to Bing as the search engine even though the default setting is set to Google.

I can't get it to default to Google, even though I am able to manually select Google as the search engine.

How can I check if this is a problem with MS Edge or some other failure?

    Using Win 10 Home

Is it possible that the Chrome upgrade caused a problem in that MS Edge no longer somehow recognises Google as a search engine?

    Another quirk

This works fine for the address bar in the Edge Browser, but not for the toolbar address bar in the Taskbar. But I am running an "insider" version of W10.

Of course it doesn't change that- they are two completely and utterly different and unrelated things.

Have you tried searching the internet for a solution? I tried searching for
    cortana default search engine
    for you...

How to Force Cortana to Use a Different Search Engine
    and there's
GitHub - da2x/EdgeDeflector: Force Windows 10 to use your preferred web browser instead of Microsoft Edge.

    Hope one of those helps.

    There are two separate issues

There are two aspects to whatever happened in the latest update, which for me took place this week on WIN 10
    Home (OEM Acer version).

    1. The default Search Engine I use was replaced with Bing.
    2. The "About:blank" setting I was using previously was defaulted back to whatever MS wants it to be.

These two issues created lots of confusion to me before I realised what was happening.

Fixing the first was relatively easy, but to get the setting to stay as I set it appears to have required clearing of the cache which I always find incredibly irritating, because of the ripple effect on all sorts of things that are then lost and have to be reset.

The second is another matter. I do not like any automatic access to any websites. I don't default to any websites and I certainly don't want news streamed automatically. The reason is simple. It is about the high cost of data in South Africa, and the lack of high-speed connections.

So now, one finds that you can get MS edge to default to "about: blank" but you must notice the small "save icon" to the right of the line where you enter in the url to about:blank.
Then you have to set new tabs to a blank page, but that one defaults to the blank page with a link to Bing as a search engine. There appears to be no way to get rid of that issue that I can find.

The third problem is then to get the settings to accept and save the setting for a specific home page. that setting will not save and stay like that.

So, I am asking if anyone here has found a way around all of this nonsense in WIN10 Home?

What, for you, is 'the latest update'? This can be quite different for different people who may be running (e.g.)
    1709, 1803, 1809, various Insider builds.

And should this be Edge-related, was Edge recently updated? What is its build?

You may be assuming this is an experience common to others...

    WIN 10 Home Single Language

    1809
    2018/12/12
    17763.379

    Cumulative Update KB4489899 1019-03-13

    MS Edge 44. 17763.1.0
    MS Edge html 18. 17763

Presumaby, this last cumulative update caused the problem. It appears to have defaulted my previous settings, which were imported from my old laptop, which was on Win 10 Pro.
I decided NOT to convert to Pro on this laptop, wanting the opportunity to build up some experience on the home version.
So far, this is the most irritating event yet with Home.

If I can't solve it, I will be converting back to Pro.

Hi, I have Pro, but I also see the New Tab problem with a Bing search bar in the page.

    See:
Microsoft Edge New Tab Page is NOT blank - Microsoft Community
    for similar discussion.

Note that Edge is being superseded soon by a Chromium-based browser

    - did you actually click the Save button shown in your screenshot?
