Automatically close blank pages in Firefox?

Is there a way to have Firefox automatically close blank pages/tabs when opened? On some sites when you download a file, it pops open a new blank page tab. Then I have to manually close the tab which is annoying. You used to be able to do this easily in Tab Mix Plus, but of course now that no longer works in Firefox. Here's a description of what I'm taking about:

I've never seen a blank page open like that... but I have seen many instances where downloading a file is followed by a help/sales/ thanks for downloading page.

    Do you have an example?

Firefox repeatedly opens empty tabs or windows after you click on a link | Firefox Help

Depends I guess on how the page is configured, but it's common enough that they had the option to disable it in Tab Mix Plus.

I use Internet Download Manager for downloading. What I notice is if I download directly using Firefox, a blank page will sometimes open just for a second but it closes immediately when the Firefox download dialog box pops up. But if I have Internet Download Manager enabled to take over downloads, when I click a link to download, a blank page sometimes pops up but it stays up after IDM takes the download. It doesn't close the Firefox blank page.

I'll have to go hunt one down. Not every site has this issue. I see it happen a lot but haven't paid attention to what sites specifically.

Okay, here's a page that has this issue:

    http://forum.zidoo.tv/index.php?thre...eleased.45034/

It's a firmware link to my media player. The download link is under the change log:

    "Download url:http://apidl.zidoo.tv/X10/v2.1.22/X10-v2.1.22-201901171342-ota.zip"

When I click that download link, it pops open an about:blank tab before the download begins, then leaves it there so I have to close it manually. This is with internet download manager disabled, so only the Firefox save dialog pops up.

Is that your FF build- 65.02 - and do you have any add-ons that might cause this? Try FF in its safe mode. (No add-ons).
