Perhaps you were accessing Internet Options via IE, Internet Options being a Control Panel applet.

Forced removal of IE is risky and will break some applications.

You may not use IE but there are Microsoft and third party applications that use IE components or the browser itself. This can happen in ways that are far from obvious. Many applications have the need to display Internet webpages. If their needs are basic an application will typically use the users chosen browser. But in other situations the application developer desires or needs a greater level of control. In such cases the developer has 3 choices.

    1. Try to use the users default browser. Trying to exercise any degree of control over whatever browser the user may have chosen is highly impractical.
    2. Use the low level facilities provided by the OS. This is possible but to provide the facilities often required is a great deal of work and would increase development time and the cost of the product.
    3. Use Internet Explorer or it's components. It was designed for this and the methods are reasonably well documented. An easy choice.

Developers use IE because it is included with every Windows installation. If the user chooses to forcibly remove it he must accept the consequences.

As Dirk said, uninstalling IE doesn't really get rid of it. You can still enter iexplore from a run box and IE launches. Uninstalling it just seems to remove easy access to it.

Ah, UK. Didn't the EU force MS to un-bundle IE from Windows?

I think that the EU insisted on a "browser choice" screen but IE was still installed. Anyway I've removed it along with Edge, WMP, Defender and other stuff. That suits me but if anyone else is tempted be aware that cumulative updates may fail in some cases resulting in the need to reinstall windows.

I just don't use EDGE or IE and I have enough problems with Windows 10. I did remove IE once and the size of Windows 10 on my SSD increased so I put it back. I just ignore it..

I think, if you force delete IE system files, you'll have problems with other browsers etc., as well.

There are remnants in folders, leave them alone!
You won't be able to invoke either, after those two tweaks. Leave it at that.
