What's this cloudflare nonsense when browsing ??

    Hi folks

what's this stuff that comes up a lot of times these days -- cloudflare -- what is it -- somebody's new data collection service, CIA doing something , trump admin looking for income tax returns or what -- just comes in when you access some sites the first time but you don't really want to wait as much as 5 secs before you get on to the site.

What's this cloudflare nonsense when browsing ??-cloudflare.png

    Cheers

It's a service which sits between your browser and some of the sites that you're trying to get to. I don't know how it does it but it acts to help prevent DDoS attacks from bringing the target websites down. I'm guessing that if bad actors try to DDoS flood xyz.com then Cloudflare absorbs and dumps the attacks from co-ordinated IPs whilst allowing non-flooding IPs through to the target website?

I've seen it in use on several of the websites I use regularly/daily. When a target website is really unreachable, i.e. down for maintenance, then Cloudflare provides info to that effect so you're not just left wondering what's going on.

I think it can also be used as a content provider, i.e. providing download content on behalf of the target sites but I think most websites just use if for the DDoS protection.

I'm fairly confident it's about ensuring a continuous service and nothing to do with data collection.
    Hope this helps...
