Outlook Mail changing incoming messages to "read"

When I turn on the computer, open up Outlook Mail I might receive say 25 emails. Initially the are highlighted bold (not read) but if I walk away and come back in 30 minutes the are no longer highlighted bold and are now "read" This causes me to search my many emails trying to decipher which I've already viewed, etc. Any help would be much appreciated. Was it always like this? Or is this behavior something that happened recently?

If it was always like this, I guess you have pop3 mail account. Switch connection to IMAP, messages will stay unread then.
Also you could tell who is email provider (is this Hotmail, Gmail, something else...). Don't type whole email address!

I just received the new Dell 7920 last week and it's been doing this from day one. Microsoft support is of no help. My email is with email.fatcow.com

Is this the Web Portal, Outlook from Microsoft Office, or the built in mail app for Windows 10?

When you say Outlook mail.. Is this MS Office Outlook (just asking to be sure)?
Sorry, but I'm not familiar with your provider..

Edit. check here for instructions: fatcow.com help/article/email-client-setup-outlook-2003

When you set the account, which type did you choose? Or was is automatically?

You need to edit out your email address. The built in app is very limited. Suggest using Thunderbird as a free alternative.

When adding your account to Windows mail, scroll down and select Advance setings. Then check at your mail provider:

    fatcow.com help/article/email-client-setup

    and set account as IMAP.
    IMAP Incoming Server: imap.fatcow.com
Incoming Port: 143 (or 993 with SSL enabled))
