Everyone is going to have a different opinion, desire, and need depending. Do what is right for you.
My own personal decision, ymmv, is to stay with WinMail, using v1607 which is still continually updated with a new monthly Cumulative so I am always up to date, importantly = security wise; everything new after that is just bells and whistles which is never ending...

Has anyone tried this one? I was fed up trying to find "replacement for Windows Mail" so I keyed in "replacement for WM or OE" & got a few extra hits & landed here ($35 Cdn dollars if you want multiple Identities but I assume multiple accounts are allowed in the free version although I haven't tried it yet): OE Classic - Easy to use Outlook Express replacement

OK I did install it and it works fine but only allowed me to Import 2 of my 9 email accounts. I also have no idea how to set it as the default mail program in Windows 10.
I hate their new Metro-look Default Program UI as it wont allow for an external program to be used, just another App dammit. The old interface would allow it.
    Any ideas?

Yes, use Mozilla Thunderbird. It has ALL the features that Windows Mail had and it's free!

Tried it but didn't like how it separated out each account into its own set of folders. OEClassic at least keeps only one set of folders, which I like.

I'm using it now and love it. Yes the free version only lets you use 2 Accounts but the $$ version I bought, am currently using it with 9 accounts and 70+ folders. Works great. Just wish it would use the Windows Contact List/Address Book instead of having to make up one using *.csv. BTW, It did not break when PCs updated to Windows 10 version 1709 (Fall Creators Update)
Plus, a licensee can use on more than 1 PC as I was told by tech at OE Classic.

Any idea how to associate it with the mailto: protocol ?? I've tried every way I could find on the web, batch files, the lot.
Can't get any choice other than the Mail App or Outlook or search in the Apps store (only) !!

I also can't find any setting in OEClassic that actually makes it the default mail client, can you?
